Apple filed its quarterly report (SEC form 10-Q) with the Securities and Exchange Commission Thursday. In the filing, which is available as a 65-page PDF document, Apple discloses several details on net sales, its retail stores, job cuts, iTunes and more.
“There can be no assurance that [we] will be able to provide products and services that effectively compete in these markets or successfully distribute and sell digital music outside the U.S.”
This is very unfortunate.
do you want to buy restricted use and access digital rights managed music? from apple or anyone else for that matter?
with lower quality than what you can get on cd?
personally, i hope hope this whole online music racket goes up in smoke or they start selling downloadable music cds i can then burn or encode as i see fit.
Peripheral (iPod) sales up 148%
Unit (?) sales up.
iMac sales down 16%
PowerMac sales down.
I think it’s a shame that the cube was such a flop. I know it had heat problems or whatever but the lack of that type of product is exactly the reason I am holding off buying a mac. Looking at the small case for the iMac it is clear Apple could again produce a cube.
Windows users don’t really “switch”. Even most of the Linux advocates I know keep a windows partition around for a rainy day. I would like to aquire a mac as a secondary system but I don’t room on my desk for an eMac. A powerpc would work for this but the $2000 + updates and software places it well out of my price range for a second platoform.
Their market share continues to shrink, and even they admit the iTunes gravy train may not be there for ever. Maybe they should open up the platform or port to x86 while they still have cards in the deck.
So, declining market share but increasing sales!
Market growth just need to be faster than their Sales growth, which is apparently happening.

Well, I don’t think a cube would be a good idea, but something like a SGI Indy, Indigo or even something cool like the O2like case would be great, coupled that with a G5 processor and a ATI 9500 AGP Graphics card.
Apple would still retain its style edge whilst providing a competitive advantage for those who don’t wish to purchase an “all ‘n one”, with that being said, Apple need to fix their low end.
They need to get that IBM G4 which starts out at 2Ghz and push it out to their pieces of hardware. If they can pull the processor and FSB up to todays standards, they will regain their marketshare. It isn’t just about price, it is about price/performance and I’m sorry, even as a Mac user, I can accept that paying AUS$1299 for a 1.25Ghz eMac is a rip off. For that price, you can get a faster and more feature complete computer from Dell or IBM.
If it were AUS$1299 for a eMac with 256MB DDR 400Mhz memory and a 2Ghz PowerPC 750VX, then it would be bloody good value, but sorry, at the current configuration, even as a “Mac fanboy”, I don’t blame people from being turned off from buying a Mac.
When you buy a PC, you usually buy a few magazines and compare models. And I think that’s when things go wrong for Apple :
Since most magazines are PC only and don’t even mention Apple’s machines, it almost guarantees that the new buyer or previous PC owner will always buy a PC. Since Macs are not in the low end of the market, inexperienced buyers find it unconfortable going for machines that are hardly mentionned in the press and by their entourage.
Interestingly, it’s only Sound and Graphics specialised magazines that speak of both platform without a second thought.
envy?
happy user of an iBook 14″ with both osx and debian unstable on it.
no windows nowhere except the winxp box that my borther uses for gaming.
i don’t see envy, ppc is a great arch. and apple makes the world’s best hardware, coupled with the os i like more and the apps i prefer (debian + kde) it makes a great platform!
You are correct sir,
I also think they are overpriced and thats why I bought an iBook (last years PowerBook) last week, i’m staying at the low end from now on until either the G5 hits the other products or the newer IBM G4 makes its debut. I touched a 15″ AluBook last year and wished I hadn’t, it wasn’t worth even the developers price I had paid on it.
I was going to get an all singing all dancing 12″ PB this year but it really isn’t singing that loud or dancing that well.
I’m a mac fanboy as well. However i’m sure others will disagree.
I would leave the platform if its wasn’t for the stability of the hardware and software being tied together. I hate going back to windows and I know with linux that it will be hell trying to get everything setup when I don’t have the time for it and then only get half the results I would get if I was on the mac anyway.
On the one hand,
Total Mac sales increased by 6% and 11% during the second quarter and first six months of 2004 compared with the same periods last year.
On the other,
Net sales and unit sales of iMacs were down 17% and 15%, respectively, during the second quarter.
declining sales of Power Macs also had a negative effect…
So if iMac sales and Power Mac sales were both down, does this mean that iBook and eMac sales more than made up the difference?
In any case, it’s good to know that Apple is not, in fact, dead yet ๐
The eMac is included in the iMac numbers. They sold a lot of iBooks and PowerBooks…
This is also referenced in the story; where they say the sales are down due to a perferance for portable systems.
For anyone still under the delusion that Apple’s success is due to Mac OS, note that total software sales was 32 million. Their hardware sales were ten times that amount…
Jobs is totally focused on digital media.
Apple/Pixar will be the next Sony (media + consumer electronics), not the next Dell.
Executives feed the strongest child first. iPod will be eating before the Mac. Note that the iPod will be the first in a long line of Apple devices that do not strictly require a Macintosh/OSX system.
Its time for Apple to transition in any case. They fought the good fight but the battle for the desktop ended long ago. For once Apple is on top in a market and its not hard to predict where Apple’s R&D will be focused in the future.
Steve’s next coup – do for digital video what the iPod did for digital audio.
Apple needs to sell a switcher system. A mini G5 system with medium to high end video card, enough ram and hd etc.. sell it for $1100. But here’s the kicker, include a usb keyboard and mouse (needs to be minimum 2 button in this case) one or two of the newest games, and a KVM switch.
For just a few extra pieces of hardware and software they have just given everyone that owns a PC the reason to upgrade to a mac. They can still use their old PC, and run their brand new mac at the same time. The more and more they use the mac the less they’ll use their pc and see how much better osx is, and eventually they have no use for their pc.
And to top it off, Apple will buy back the KVM switch for $15.
“happy user of an iBook 14″ with both osx and debian unstable on it.”
I didn’t speak to Linux-users like you, anyway. ๐
I spoke to that kind of Linux-users they haven’t better to do than to say bad to Apple. I think they have an orgasm every time you can do it. Very little sub-human beings…
Anyway, I like Linux too, but I prefer Gentoo LiveCD with Gnome. ๐
“no windows nowhere except the winxp box that my borther uses for gaming.”
Computers are for work or communication. Consoles are for games.
If your brother want a very good piece of hardware to play with PC-like games an XBOX is better and it cost less than a regular WinPC.
In fact, it is also more useful than a regular WinPC and it is the demostration that egual market conditions (console market conditions!) can make good products even by a “not really good” company! ๐
PS Yeah, I’m a Mac Zealot with a VERY CHEAP iBook G4 12″ to work/communicate and a very fun XBOX to play! No one is perfect! ๐

I agree, Apple should be using the IBM G4 and make a pro-desktop model that starts 1,200.00 to 1,400.00 US fully loaded. Currently at 1400 you barely get a iMac and it’s under-powered for big jobs in Shake or even Motion which recomments a 2gig G5.
Agressive pricing will be good for CUSTOMERS Apple, and in turn will add more Macs in companies.
“very competitive and we see in the future the prices of the albums coming down, not going up, because that’s what it’s going to take to sell more albums and it’s in everybody’s best interest to do so.”(macrumors.com)
Ok Job’s, please think about the lowering G5 desktop prices you love and sell when you talk about music, because it would be in everyone’s best interest to do so.
…”under-powered for big jobs in Shake or even Motion which recomments a 2gig G5. “
neither Shake nor Motion require a 2ghz g5, both require a 867 mhz G4 or faster.. beings that imacs have 1.25Ghz processors in them, thats about 130% faster processor then is required.. not too bad, but still not that much when compaired to a g5.. but i guess that’s neither here nor there, i just wanted to point out neither appp required a 2ghz g5

Um according to my calculations then a 1.25Ghz G4 would be 1250/867 = 44% faster than the required 867Mhz G4

He did not say they required a 2Ghz G5 but RECOMMENDED those specs. For professional and productive work you usually go for at least the recommended specs (and if you use those programs for a living that is usually not a problem).
it is not recommended on any page of apples, they recommend 867 or greater..
and 44% of 867 is 381.48, saying 140% would be more accurate. the 100% accounts for the equivilant, the additonal 40 taking it above the equivilant speed.

When I mean AUS$1299, I mean in Australian dollars. As for the G5 PowerMacs, this would be an overkill for many, a low iMac/eMac is underpowered, so if they can get a computer together that is mid range, and suite the middle of the road enthusiast/ametuer artist pricing an iMac at around AUS$2000 with a decent configuration, they’ll get the market place.
I’ve looked at DickSmiths, who sell HP and believe me, there are people who are quite happy to pay AUS$2499 for a computer, so it is necessarily the price that turns people off, its the price/performance and the lack of profile in the retail market or even access to an Apple store that isn’t located out where donkeys dig for day light ๐
IMHO, a 32bit 750VX or even that new “system-on-a-chip” 600e/700e from the Motorolla spin-off would be a great chip. 3Ghz, 400Mhz bus, 256MB ram standard etc. etc. It would be a great combo.

I said “44% FASTER” which then is completely accurate. You can’t say “140% faster” because that would imply G4 running at 2,08 Ghz (given linear scaling, which is not a reality)
A CPU that is twice as fast as another CPU, is 100% FASTER than the other. It is not and never will be 200% FASTER. This you should know from school
