GeekPatrol put together some benchmark results (using XBench) for the last 3 versions of Mac OS X (only read the numbers, the percentages are calculated wrong). Tiger is close to Panther overall, but the final version will probably be faster as it will be further optimized and without debug symbols.
The percentages look fine (maybe they fixed them?).
The percentages for Tiger are based off of Panther (and not off of Jaguar).
I tested out Tiger yesterday and had a good time with it. Dashboard is quite neat, can’t wait to see more widgets for it. RSS in safari was indeed REALLY nice. I found Tiger to be a bit laggy however, I was actually surprised to see it was better in most stuff (except UI… which makes sense, because thats where the slowdown I saw was also).

Perhaps that is why Tiger is still a preview release. Apple is likely trying to work in some optimization of their code and clean things up a bit to get it running faster. I am sure the end result will be one hell of an OS.

Oh I agree with you fully. I probably should have stated that myself. I took the speed issues with a grain of salt. I am not worried at all about the final release. I was just happy to see some of the new features.
anyone notice the drop in opengl performance from jaguar? it’s kinda a lot.
Can anyone make benchmarks between different windows releases?
I’m sure Windows Xp is faster than Windows 2000… And LongHorn beta is similiar in speed to Windows Xp, like Tiger is to Panther..
😛
i’m kidding
Can anyone make benchmarks between different windows releases?
Here’s one that compares Windows 2000 and XP. As expected, they’re basically identical.

You give me the link.. Who to trust more? Tech-What or Infoworld?
Because we all know Infoworld is a biased website fans of Mac and Linux.. And of course Beos! They only hate Windows, Microsoft, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer (aka I luv this company)
The tests at Infoworld shows that windows xp and windows 2000 are identical in performance with the optimized theme (w2k), not the default theme…
The article of Infoworld shows 2 tests, one from an independent company (CSA Research) and one in-house…
The tests at Tech-Report and Infoworld are using different machines and different processors.. Would this mean that Windows is more optimized for AMD?… The Folks at Intel should be furious
Anyway.. I wasn’t speaking of W2k being identical in speed to Windows XP..
I was speaking of Windows XP being faster.. Which isn’t… Than W2K…
Take it how u want..
10.3 is faster than 10.2, 10.2 is a lot faster than 10.1, 10.1 is much faster than 10.0…
10.3 is nearly as fast as the older system Mac Os 9….
Will be LongHorn.3 nearly as fast as Windows 98? We’ll see..
I’m a multi-platform guy and I Would like to see this level of optimization in Microsoft Software… Why Office 2004 for Mac is slower than Office v.X???

I can say the same for other Apple products, not only Mac Os X..
Final Cut Pro 4 is faster than 3 (More realtime effects in the same machine..) and 3 is faster than 2..
iMovie 4 is faster than 3, iPhoto 4 is faster than 3, iTunes 4 is faster than 3..
Apple has showed that they tries to optimize software the most possible, their only requires new machines for new features that irremediably need it, like core image/video in panther.. (it’s difficult to do all those realtime effects in older machines with older graphics..).
And.. When i’m saying i’m kidding is because i’m kidding..
Sorry for my bad english, i’m spanish..
i use an ibook with 8mb vram, window resizing is choppy as hell, BUT itunes doesn’t do the realtime thing since version 4, so i would be happy seeing apple offering this non-realtime resizing for older macs (like my ibook) … i can live with snappy non-realtime, but i can’t stand all this choppyness. no. 🙂
