Many are the developers who prefer Perforce in favor of CVS. There is a new player in the field now though. It is called Vesta and it is a replacement for both CVS and ‘make’. It handles source revision control and automated construction. It is the result of over 10 years of research and development at the Compaq/Digital Research Center. Just last August Compaq gave the ‘ok’ to LGPL Vesta and since then the 4-member team worked hard to finish up the port to x86 Linux (prior to that, Vesta only worked on Alpha and Tru64 systems). There seems to be at least three new opensource projects taking on CVS for the throne: Arch, Subversion and now Vesta.
cvs should have competition, it is not that good to be on the top
It’s really sad that they are releasing a better CVS/make to the world when the internal development of Tru64 is done with horrible horrible tools.

But where is the source code? Can something be LGPL, when they only make binaries available?
The binaries doesnt even run, after configuring ./repository just seg-faults when I try to start it. And as long as I dont have the f…ing source code, I cant fix it!
So does anyone have any unbiased comparisions of all these different contenders? I have considered seriously moving my CVS project to Subversion since it seems to be an easy transition. Any links would be greatly appreciated!
The source code is distributed by Vesta’s own replication mechanism. Vesta is built using itself (rather than make or some other builder), so the sources by themselves are a little less than useful. See the FAQ for more information:
