“An alternative to Apache, this Swedish company’s web server offers modularity, a built-in macro language (RXML) and Pike. The Roxen WebServer, from the Swedish company Roxen Internet Software, is a viable alternative for those who find Apache inappropriate for their needs. Although Apache dominates the internet web server market, it has some weak points: it lacks a built-in SQL database backend, flexible administration tools and easy SSL certificate management. All of these features can be found, however, in the Roxen WebServer. In fact, Roxen includes so many additional features that it seems more like an application server than an ordinary web server.” Read the rest of the review at LinuxJournal.
GO Lysator !
This sounds like a very interesting alternative. I seem to remember some review, maybe in <u>PC World</u>, that compared the main web server alternatives and found Roxen slower that many of the others when it came to raw throughput. But for most of us that is not the foremost issue. In terms of ease of administration (at least, once the administration port is set up for SSL), Roxen sounds great. Hopefully the PHP module will be improved upon too.
I’ve been running Roxen on a site I’m administering for a little project with about twenty people, as well as running a fairly active messageboard. Although I’m not an advanced user in any way, I must say I really like Roxen in general and the admin interface in particular. And they’ve got a Power Puff Girl-theme =)
They complain about the fac that the config files are in XML. It might just be me, but I prefer a nice, easy to use, understandable GUI to editing arcane line oriented config files by hand any day of the week. And if it’s really very incredibly important to do it by hand, it’s still possible to edit the XML..
In the article I think they say that the admin interface isn’t using SSL, but you make it do so if you want. Just set the admin URL to https://site:port/ during the setup (or later on in the admin interface).
Anyway it’s a nice server, try it out!
