On MenuetOS 0.78-pre3 there is a new screen layout, with a new panel application, graphics designed by Andrew Youll. The menus, applications and icons are completely under user control now – just edit MPANEL.DAT to make changes. You do not need to re-boot for changes to take effect.
bottom line, the ui looks bloated to me. Maybe try a new interface, it may pay off. Please keep in mind a UI should not get IN THE WAY the way this one seems to. This is not to knock any accomplishments of the operating system.
give him a break, he has made a compleate operating system from scratch in assembler. The gui not being to your tastes is hardly a big deal.
MenuetOS is such a great operating system! Really cool he released it under the terms of the GPL!
It is not often you hear the term ‘bloated’ included in a description (in any way) of an OS that fits on a floppy disk.
Wow! Reminds me of my Amiga500 that would boot from a floppy, too. Ahh the good old days. How refreshing to see a project that remembers how to keep code clean & small! I think it would be fantastic to have this os scale to something that -could- be a (more or less) full OS to do all chores that mainstream OS’s do. Great project, I’m interested.

I must agree, the amount of whitespace is huge in the new menubar, the menu-button looks bigger dan de new XP start button. I must say I like the ID of the little overhang on the programs-menu, it looks like it slided from behind the menubar.
The second step menu, gives no feedback from where it originally came from, yes I know that are games, but it looks like it also sould spawn from demos.
The clock looks like a started program in the menu bar, it has the same design as the started program, does this mean I can disable the clock turn it of and turn it on again.
The quit button is in the menu, not a real problem, but make it isolated a little more, whitespace is a good use here, or a line.
The window theme looks totally different from the menubar and programsmenu, I like it when they look like 1.
I also wanted to say I have the outmost respect for the programmer, keep up the good work.
the only place where people complain about the UI of an OS written completely in assembly and fits on a floppy.
This new operating system doesn’t seem to work everywhere. On a presario 5110 it won’t work, at least the keyboard or the mouse.
I can’t believe how good it looks and how functional it is and it all fits on a floppy! This is really amazing. As proof of concept goes, I give you an 11/10 and an A+ for effort. Nice work.
im no coder im a designer i’ve done all the graphics on the new GUI there is still a new window style to be implemented and the idea behind this GUI is for simplicity, also the 2nd level menu does give an indicator of its parent as the top of the menu appears next to it.
okay the design isnt everyones cup of tea, and i will most likely refine the design once i’ve finished my other design commitments.
How do expect us to test the OS when you won’t fix the USB mouse issue? To make matters worse, there’s no keyboard navigation. It’s been like this for ages now. The most common input devices must work first, if you want the public to test or take your OS seriously.
Mystilleef, why are you always so harsh on anything NOT Linux? I really don’t get that; these guys are doing an amazing job, trying to put a complete functional OS on a floppy disk.
In my opinion, what the MenuetOS guys do is far more admirable than what Linus did/does.
On top of that, a free one that’s GPL’d.
The developers are fully aware of the limits of the system. But as so many open source developers, they work on Menuet in their free time.
The USB mouse is not about -fixing- it’s about writing a whole lot of new code.
Anyway, a big thumb up to Ville and Mike.
(& all other coders out there who didn’t bitch about a lack of features, but contributed instead)
Groenten,
Tolle.
Why don’t you give the coder a helping hand with the UI instead of just throwing negative feedback on him here at OSnews. I bet that you can’t make a better menu yourself!
Wonderful work on this project. Good job!
very nice done guys keep MenuetOS up is good already and the design is good.
i do all the menuetOS Core Distro graphics and im not a coder lol, mike hibertt (hope i’ve spelt that right lol) codes all the widgets and other images i send, him and jpelczar is working on the windows skin that i designed.
@ Tima
I wrote feedback, don’t have the time to do a GUI design, but I can see what’s missing and I trust the actual designer he can handle feedback and that he has the skills to make a GUI.
I want to finish my school this year as Interaction Designer, and gui-design is part of my studie. And busy writing papers and sort
when i originally designed the taskbar it was intended that the clock was to stay in the curve on its own, and the apps would be docked in the long straight section but mike_h did it inside the curve, i think that works better as it gives the menu bar some character, but as someone said i think it was “syrek” i need to design a different dock surround for the apps to differentiate it from the clock.
Very Cool Project.
Amazing on how much there can be done in a 1440kb image.
Keep up the good work!

No it ain’t. Read carefully.
I think everyone know that MenuetOS is a great OS, but the GUI is a important things of modern operating system. People need help from other people to make something as best as possible. So we give Andrew this help. I think that the taskbar is to big to, maybe Andrew can change this a bit. Good thing would be if you read some GUI-Guidelines, because you can always learn from it, Andrew.
well i’ve recently been reading fitts laws on GUI design (which is always fun lol) and well the taskbar is a bit large but when you get into higher resolutions above 800×600 it seems a reasonable size to me, but well we dont all share the same views at the moment im waiting for mike and jpelczar to get the windows style i designed done and then once we hav a uniform GUI ill tweak the design, and well the icon set included with menuetOS is always being updated and is available for download from my website:
http://denux.org/index.php?denux=skykons.htm
If your icon set is included, is it too gpl? your site appears to say no…………
i’ve given menuetOS permission to use my graphics and iconset, but they remain my property, any menuetOS distro is also free to use the graphics.
the icon set is free for personal use but not for commercial use or for distribution, unless i give permission to do so. i’ve been a fond follower of menuetOS for a while so i have given them permission to use them. also OSS projects i tend to give them free usage of the icons as i wish to help alternative software but if its commercial they can afford to pay for the usage rights IMO.
i would just like to say that i think menuet is a great OS…. and i would just correct Youlle: the name is spelled Mike Hibbett and jpelczar is actualy Jarek Pelczar….
maybe someone can explain me the goals of this operating system. where’s it going to be? as I understood, it is written in IA-32 Assembly. and what’s so amazing in this OS?
its the fact that is pure ASM fits on a floppy has a GUI, fully working IDE, games, HTTP Server, IRC Client, Full TCP/IP Stack, MP3 Server, CD Player, and much more on one floppy disk
Maybe it’s great, I’ve tried to boot it. doesn’t work in Virtual PC, there was a need in the real IA32 hardware (it’s hard for me . all you mentioned (floppy, gui, assembly, etc.) you can find in the first Macintosh System (year nineteen 84). but it was for 400k floppies! and yes, if you also include an old TCP/IP system extension and so on, you’ll fit 1.3K!
VPC has problems with IRQ’s dont know wht menuetOS works in VMware, also there was a HTTP and Mp3 server in the first macintosh release? internet didnt exist when Macintoshes appeared. at most there was DARPA
