MandrakeSoft has recently released the latest version of their desktop operating system. Mandrake Linux 9.2 Download Edition is available on their web site across three ISO files for the Club members. The first disk is about 650megs and the following two are ~700.

Mandrake Linux, has just hit the street in an all new version 9.2 (codename: FiveStar). This new version is based on Linux version 2.4.22 (an optional Linux 2.6.0pre is also available and included), XFree86 4.3, binaries built upon GCC 3.3.1, Apache 2.0.43, KDE 3.1.3, Gnome 2.4.0, OpenOffice 1.1 and more.

MandrakeSoft, the third biggest Linux provider which has known financial problems, decided to go ahead and offer advertising options via its upcoming operating system. Regular screensavers, bookmarks, default first browser page and Installation screens will feature advertisements. The ads will only be part of the free download edition and not the purchased version of the OS. OSNews featured a poll last year regarding advertising via an OS: 55% did not favor the idea, 30% did and 13% were not sure.

In that review, Sanchez noted the numerous advances made in 9.0, but also reported some serious flaws that somewhat limited his enthusiasm. I started rsync'ing a Mandrake 9.2 beta 2 CD this morning and when I went to start the second CD this afternoon, I noticed that the beta 2 CDs were gone and there was a RC1 CD becoming available.

Desktop/LX Update 3 RC 1 available

The Lycoris Development Team is hard at work finishing Desktop/LX Update 3, and release candidate 1 is now available. All users can use the Update Wizard to update their systems to build 127, available from the mirrors. It includes many more bugfixes and user improvements. Update 3 is slated for an early September release.

Lycoris: No SCO Fees Here

Back when Lycoris was still Redmond Linux, they licensed their source code off of SCO's Caldera Open Linux. According to Lycoris, that license is going to insulate them and their users from SCO's licensing fee requirements.

Updated Mandrake 9.1 Kernel not Safe; 9.2-b1 Announcement

MandrakeSoft issued an urgent message for all 9.1 users to back out of the 24mdk kernel update and downgrade to 18mdk or 13mdk. A problem exists in all kernels (except kernel-secure) where newly created files are created mode 0666 (world writeable) on any filesystem other than XFS, including remote NFS mounts. A corrected kernel is to be released soon. Update: The official announcement of 9.2-b1 is out.
