I am using it actualy on an Ubuntu ‘box’ and despite some bug and missing some loved plugins (3d by exemple) the new compiz-beryl children seems well born.

Perhaps someone who wants all of those effects. GNOME will probably not offer many plugins because of their focus on simplicity. Furthermore compiz already has a large community with a lot of plugins and users.
Why invest developers’ time re-inventing the wheel? Gnome should just bundle Compiz Fusion, only including a few plugins by default (in keeping with their “less is more” philosophy), and then allow the user to add more or turn on more features if they want.
I’ve actually heard talk that they’re thinking more about replacing Metacity with Compiz rather than putting this stuff into Metacity…
Main show stopper right now is that Compiz isn’t a very complete window manager – no window snapping being the most obvious of the downfalls… when that is done, I’d expect Compiz to replace Metacity.
There’s a “snapping windows” plugin available in fusion now.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see them replace Metacity with Compiz. Isn’t that how Metacity came to be, a Gnome compatible window manager that was better than the old one?
I have nothing against this new name… actually, it’s very fitting to the project IMHO.
I wish good luck to the project and hope everyone who contributed to beryl somehow continue to contribute to it with its new face, as contributing to the community is much more important than names and, ultimately, politics.

Good thing that “VMWare Fusion” starts with “VMWare” and not “Compiz” like “Compiz Fusion” does.
Although, you’re right… someone might confuse Compiz Fusion with Denny’s “Fruit Fusion” line of drinks. Oh noes!

Since they are completely different products, unlikely to be confused, they should be fine from both a trademark law and a community perspective. I don’t really see a problem.
IBPhoenix is the only entity I can think of who might raise a stink over it, if they had a project named “Fusion”. And so far as I know, they don’t.

If they get rid of “compiz” I think it would be better for the project. We in the open-source community have a lot of, well weird and interesting names and we get used to them when we see them in print.
BUT, please say “compiz” a couple times out loud to another human being and it sounds rather silly.

I always liked the name “Compiz”.. I would think the kind of people who would be confused/turned off by an unfamiliar sounding name are probably the kind of people who don’t need to know what the window manager on their computer is called anyway.
I think Compiz is a much more descriptive-sounding name–it makes it clear that it has something to do with compositing. Beryl has a certain ring to it but ultimately brings to mind the metal beryllium rather than anything to do with compositing.
What we have here is a Compiz fork re-merging with Compiz. It should be called… Compiz. There is no “fusion” going on. It’s more like “reconciliation.” But that’s an incredibly bad name.
If the Beryl folks are so adamant about the resulting name not being simply Compiz, but are willing to accept an extension of that name, then there are better extensions than Fusion. Maybe something that reflects the nature of the project. How about… Compiz FX? Or simply… FX?

Beryl was fork of compiz, but many of the plugins for beryl were then ported back to compiz. Fusion isn’t a bad name, since that’s effectively what is happening anyways.
I rather like the Compiz name, and it doesn’t sound silly.
Actually, here in sweden, we have a very similar word, kompis, that is pronounced the same and means friend/buddy.

For most users, the name of something that should be seamlessly integrated into whatever distro it winds up in is largely irrelevant. This sort of functionality should not be seen as a separate application that needs a catchy name. Frankly, I think it would be better for the major DEs (Gnome, KDE, XFCE) to use whatever code works from Compiz et al and tightly integrate it, and I really don’t see Compiz Fusion lasting very long once the DEs have a good compositing solution built-in.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this. I like the Gnome mantra of less is more. It doesn’t get in your way and it is not distracting. Also less eye candy gives you better performance.
