It’s official: Dell doesn’t have an exclusive deal with Intel, and has an open mind on using AMD processors in its products. So said company chairman Michael Dell last week when cornered by a Reuters reporter at the World Economic Forum event in Davos, Switzerland. “Sure,” he said when asked if the company might offer Opteron and/or Athlon-based machines. “We do not have an exclusive relationship with Intel.”
Just because he says they don’t have an exclusive relationship with Intel does not mean that they will start shipping products with AMD processors.
It’s like saying that you shop at Tesco’s (or Wal-Mart for you Yankees) all the time, but the “relationship” is “non-exclusive”!
Translation:
We want to squeeze out an even better deal from Intel
Ah, yes. When an executive or politician speaks, consider the logical inverse of the words. Often this lifts the fog.
How many more times is Dell going to say “We are considering/open to using AMD chips.” and not doing it before the press stops covering it?

They talk the talk, but can they walk the walk? Whether Dell will use AMDs CPUs or not is getting real old.
I think Dell’s not planning on changing anytime soon. There are serious doubts as to AMD’s ability to keep up with Dell’s huge demand.
Dell, however, doesn’t want to back themselves into a corner. If AMD suddenly ballooned when it comes to demand and capacity (and/or develops something better than intel again), then Dell may be tempted to at least offer SOME AMD machines. Performance in certain areas is key – they don’t want their machines seen as lackluster, do they? Dell’s just being a business. They want greater profits. Therefore, they’ll do whatever makes the most sense to this end.
Intel Inside doesn’t mean much of anything anymore. Even joe sixpack is beginning to forget the “intel” name and is beginning to learn “AMD” as well – or learn not to care at all…
I agree and Michael Dell is just being cautious of the changing market similar to how HP now sells systems with the choice of either Intel or AMD processors and option of either Windows or Linux. As a consumer I want options, not limitations when it comes to making a system purchase. The more flexible a company is will see more cash flow from customers.

More like “we could have an exclusive relationship with someone else”. Perhaps ‘logical’ was a lousy choice in wording.
I’d think that the logically inverse of “We do not have an exclusive relationship with Intel” would be “We do have an exclusive relationship with Intel”. Or are you saying that AMD is the opposite of Intel? (Which would be weird since they are in pretty much the same business 😉

AMD should not allow Dell to use their products, they were not supportive to them when they really needed them. Now they AMD CPUs are more appealing than Intel thus they will use AMD. Maybe they will ditch then when intel beats AMD in the future. AMD stich with IBM and Sun and forget about who forgets you!!
annd say no to a potentialy huge costumer? What ar you A mashen? If AMD finds they have capasety to serve dell end there exsisting costumers withuot serious problems they will say yes to DELL, holding a grudge is bad for the bottum line and youre shareholders will not like it.

Business is like marriage. You cannot marry to unloyal spouse who will leave you for a better one or more sexy. In business we hear loyal customers, my own customers, my beloved customers all shows that trust is a must in a healthy relationship like in business; even more in computer businesses we see even some customers worship their OSs, applications and they really get offended if you talk bad about their loved software or hardware.

Well if Dell finds that AMD can suplement there offerings, and make som cool (like the oposite of thye hot Intel) servers and maybe even mass market PCs all the better with energy prizes going up powerfol yet energy saving PCs (AMD uses less electricety then Intel right?) what cold be better?
My view is that you shold use the cpu that is best for the job what ever it may turn out to be maybe even IPM Power. I’m no CPU/Arch expert so I can’t say when the individual CPUs wold be best. Let the experts decide and I hope they make an unbiased decision.

If they aren’t Intel exclusive then where have they been for the last 12 months on Opteron? Sun is more competitive these days!
When I see it happen I’ll believe Michael Dell. Until then I have to believe he’s got a good reason to stay away from the most competitive server chip on the market.
Yes, if they claim to not be Intel exclusive, but don’t have Opteron products by now their comments can be given very little credibility.
Let their product line do the talking, right now it says their lips are firmly planted on intel’s ass.
If Dell offered AMD and had non-proprietary parts on their PC’s their sales would be alot better. Of course thats just what their customers want so Dell doesn’t care.

See? you can buy 14 different retail-boxed AMD processors from the Dell parts store. Of course, you’re going to have to hunt MUCH harder to find a Dell mobo to put them in….
To all journalists: I, and many other people who advise their customers about computer purchases no longer care about what the new rumor out of Dell says.
We found other sources of computes with AMD chips in them LONG TIME AGO…
i hope dell will sell soon amd computer…
will surely get one if i can buy one without windows in canada….
Hopefully they can use PPC and Via C3 also. They are not bad deals.
