From what I’ve read only one of the PS3 units (out of 200) appeared to have problems, at least one person present for 2 days didn’t see any problems. I’d take this with a pinch of salt.
That said, placing electronics into enclosed spaces (as they were) tends not to do them much good. Early XBox360 demo cases had similar problems because they didn’t let air circulate properly.
I don’t know, at the gamestore I worked at we had a 360 in a glass case running about 12 hours a day and it never once crashed or turned off.
It was pretty impressive. It did get hot but never once failed on us.
The PS3 looks better than expected, all thats been given lately is “PS3 looking bad; PS3 going to fail; blah” but this shows that it still has fight left in it.
Sony delivered with the PS2, why not give them the benefit of the doubt with the PS3?
Although I doubt I’ll be buying one since I’m quite happy with my 360 and Oblivion, I wish them the best of luck.

Because I’ve bought almost a dozen different products from SONY over the past 10 years, from plasma TVs, notebooks to digital cameras…
…and every one of them broke within a year.
This ain’t the SONY we all fell in love with back in the 80’s.
No way would the SONY of the 80’s ever consider planting a rootkit on their customer’s computers.
SONY will have to work very hard to win me back as a customer.

We’ve bought a tv, a video, and two dvd machines from them in the past year or two. All still work.
However, it’s nice to see someone actually taking a *stand* against a manufacturer they’ve been burned by.
Yes, most of my Sony stuff has failed for no apparent reason…going all the way back to the 80’s for me.
Not sure what the deal is , but I stay away from all Sony stuff these days.

Is might be just me, but these guys just seemed a bit too enthusastic about their PS3.
Okay so there hyped they got one before it hit the shops, but apart from the figerprint remark, there really nothing else said apart from “wow”, “gee”, “brilliant”, “Shiny” etc.
Them I remembered a few key points
* Sony probabaly only let them have one on the condition they did not slag it off.
* They run a PS mag, so they have to have one before the shops otherwise they can’t review any on the release games.
* The PSM mag they work for relies on Sony doing well with their console, otherwise no one would buy the mag and they would be out of a job.
So I filed this along with all the other Sony PR crap that has come out over the past 3 months.

I’m not so sure now that the PS3 is better than a Xbox 360 (technologically speaking) with the upcoming HD-DVD option and 1080p graphics driver update.
Worse yet, both Xbox 360 editions are cheaper than a PS3 and have been around for several months gathering Sony’s marketshare.
It will be interesting to see what happens.
Yeah, both XBox editions are cheaper than the PS3. That is until you add in the cost of that external HD-DVD player in which case the prices become very similar.
Consider that since the HD-DVD drive wasn’t included with the stock XBox 360 then very few developers will write software to take advantage of the format because they can’t depend on it being there. It’s the same mistake that Sony made with the Hard Drive add-on.
Not including the HD-DVD player in the stock XBox360 also means that Sony will get a tremendous market boost for their Blu-Ray disc format, as it’s easier to rationalize a $600 game console & next gen dvd player than two seperate machines. With increased Blu-Ray market penetration, Blu-Ray will become cheaper faster, further entrenching the format.

MS has stated that you *can’t* use the 360’s HD-DVD drive for games (whether that’s for technical reasons or because MS won’t allow you to do it)
Both PS3s have a harddrive. It’s the *360* where the cheaper version doesn’t have one.
Oh and let me conclude my 360 bashing by saying that I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for those great new 1080p games using MS’s wunder-drivers.
OTOH I’m not quite as confident as the parent that the included BD drive will really make Blu-Ray a success but we’ll know in a year or two =)

To add the hard drive you had to buy Final Fantasy which came with the drive, and a broadband adapter. Plus the drive wasn’t even available for the first 2 or 3 years after the PS2 was on the market.

in 1.5 years… come talk to us about marketshare in regard to PS3 and MS 360….. and we’ll see how much that lead MS had really did for them!
the PS3 is and entire generation ahead of the xbox 360…. and for every 1 person the bought a 360….there are 3-4 people gladdly waiting to grab a ps3….

Nintendo Wii is for people that want the old concept of console, switch on and play on fun games without complications; not like other that you must to learn the manual to play the game, that have superb graphics but the gameplay is gone and the excesive detailed and fastest 3d worlds cause annoying

So you’re saying that it’s impossible to have a game with great graphics and great gameplay as well? Bull I say.
Warhammer 40,000 Dawn of War, Homeworld 2, Far Cry, Half-Life 2, FEAR. All great PC games with cutting edge graphics, some of which (Far Cry esp.) are still more than most computers can handle.
On the PS2 the best games were just starting to be released. I point to God of War and Shadow of the Colossus.
Eyecandy and gameplay do mix.

I wonder how you can proclaim that something that haven’t yet happened is a fact.
Not that I care in any way (really, I don’t. I only focus on games, I don’t care on what console they run. Consoles are the wrong thing to focus on), but it always irritate me when someone tries to give his opinion more weight by portraying them as facts.

in my humble opinion, the PS3 will domintate the console market in the coming years, since it will dominate the japanese console market. and if history shows anything, it’s that if you win the battle in japan, you also win it in the west.
all the big japanese players (with the obvious exception of Nintendo) stand firmly behind the PS3 and will place their best efforts there. Square/Enix, Konami, Capcom, Namco and of course Sony themselves will focus on the PS3 platform. most of their big franchises like Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Gran Turismo, Resident Evil, Devil May Cry, Ridge Racer, Tekken, Virtua Fighter etc are already in the works.
given that the japanese market is very loyal to native brands, XBox360 seems to destined fail there just as the XBox did before. despite making a much better effort this time by signing ex Square employees to create exclusive RPG’s for 360 in an attempt at japanese market penetration.
that leaves the WII, which is the system I’m really rooting for. being a self-confessed Nintendo fan, my hopes are not exactly objective. that said, I believe the WII can carve a nice niche with it’s new controllers and Nintendo’s long time commitment to playability over graphics. not enough to cause PS3 any real competition, but hopefully enough to attract serious 3rd party support this time around.

In case you hadn’t noticed, the Wii is a very different console to the GameCube. Yes, the GC was a disaster but marketshare is misleading. For a long time the GC’s sales were comparable to the Xbox, but it wasn’t attractive enough to developers. It had neither the huge base of the PS2 or the power or features of the XBox. And what else was there to distinguish it?
The Wii really does offer something different and if they get it right, it could succeed in the same way that the DS has. Something that battle with the PSP has shown how things have changed.
Playing any one of the many WW2 FPS games, however flashy the graphics, cannot live up to playing those games 2 generations of console ago. It’s the law of diminishing returns.
The Wii could turn out to be the first Apple Newton – a brilliant, innovative device with a big achilles heel. But what if it turns out to be the Nintendo DS?

I am all for the Wii being successfull. I just don’t see it getting major market share compared to the XBox360 and PS3.
To be honest though, I am more than creeped out by the fact that the Wii wants a 24/7 internet connection and turning it ‘off’ just puts it into hybernate mode. What does Nintendo need that kind of access for?

They want to watch you while you sleep. Seriously though, Nintendo is a gaming company and this feature is for games. If you were that paranoid about security you’d never login to XBox Live.
I can’t honestly say what’s going to happen. I think Sony have made some mistakes with the PS3, but they made big mistakes with the PS2. The cost is a big issue though.
I think Microsoft have faild to capitalise on their head-start like they should’ve. They failed to understand the importance of backwards compatibility to gamers and it’s left the catalogue looking very thin in places. Games just take longer to make these days.
They’ve only just realised what an asset XBox Live Arcade is. There is the odd Doom or Sensible Soccer (in 2007) but these games and more could’ve been in development for 12 months. Instead we’re seeing some shoddy early 80s coin-op conversions to make up the numbers.
If the Wii can make games look remotely next-gen and deliver on the other things they’ve talked about, it stands a chance, as everybody’s making blunders somewhere.
What’s happening with that? Didn’t they promise to ship the PS3 with Linux on the hard drive? Links welcome. Come on, is this a nerd site or what?
I’ll be the old cynic (well, I’m not really that old, but still…) and say meh. My Atari 2600 still serves me and the kids just fine. Don’t need to worry about the young ones getting inundated with an orgy of pornographic violence, games are dirt cheap and still able to be found, they’re not so addicting that after 10 minutes of play I tell my son to turn it off to come eat dinner or whatever he doesn’t have a fit, nor does he zombie out to some virtual la-la land while he’s playing them, after 20 years, the hardware _still_ works, and back then (because you didn’t have a choice) game makers understood that games were well, games, ie. harmless pastimes to have a little fun with and not much more than that…
and before someone accuses me of just being a luddite, I did have a nintendo game cube a while back. while it was a nice machine overall, as a parent I needed to make the decision that no, this isn’t a good thing to get myd you kids hooked on. and so it had to go.
(side notes: I do let him play some games on my linux machine, freeciv is his recent favorite. oh, and we just bought one of those leapster tv thingamajigs for the younger one. also, those intellevision and coleco umpteen games in a controller are good to play around with too, got them as well.)
