802.11n on FreeBSD has been possible for at least two years now with the iwn driver (imported from OpenBSD). It was added in the buildup to 8.1, but there was a backport to the 7.x series. I think it's awesome that the Atheros people are working closely with Adrian to write this driver; as others have pointed out this work goes far beyond just the FreeBSD ecosystem. OpenBSD has drivers for several 802.11n capable devices, but they only work on 802.11a/b/g mode, not n.
There are 802.11 stack changes required to properly support 802.11n and it's a fair amount of work.
