Late last year, president Obama signed a law that makes it possible to indefinitely detain terrorist suspects without any form of trial or due process. Peaceful protesters in Occupy movements all over the world have been labelled as terrorists by the authorities. Initiatives like SOPA promote diligent monitoring of communication channels. Thirty years ago, when Richard Stallman launched the GNU project, and during the three decades that followed, his sometimes extreme views and peculiar antics were ridiculed and disregarded as paranoia - but here we are, 2012, and his once paranoid what-ifs have become reality.

SOPA and most of the stuff mentioned in the article are purely an U.S. phenomenon, and have been foreseen by a lot of people, not only Richard Stallman, and as a result of corporations having too much power.
Oh, noes, this is not a "US phenomenon". In France, we have laws like Hadopi and Loppsi which are almost the same as SOPA, and all around in europe, they're making laws like this - note that they also try to minimize the "three powers": justice power, executive power, legislative power which, ideally, shall be separated - Nowadays, Hadopi for example can take sanctions upon people *without* any judge notice or supervision, on an *automatic* basis. And you should have a look to ACTA too. You're not presumed innocent, you're presumed culprit. This is one of a hell of a hit on democracy, and an awfull hit to justice.

Software has almost nothing to do with it.
I can't disagree more. Software is *everywhere* : in your car, phone, TV, computer (of course), network (of course, bis repetita), tramway, train station, airplane and airports, weapons, bank, healthcare, police, military institutions, education, science, all our world is managed by softwares, even Wall Street. 1984's paranoïa? I don't think so, just have a look at what Blue Coat did in Syria, or Amesys/Bull in Lybia, for example: lives were taken, people were tortured *because* a software scanning what happened on the network "denounced" them. Is that the future you want for your children? Because it's on its way to become reality, sooner than you expect, and for real, in our so-called "free world".

Weird tablet', tweeted Bob Summerwill, listed as a senior software engineer at EA Canada, in a reply to a tweet posting a link about EA's no-Wii U news. 'Nintendo are walking dead at this point'." The Wii U is turning into the 21st century's Virtual Boy.

"In NixOS, the entire operating system - the kernel, applications, system packages, configuration files, and so on - is built by the Nix package manager from a description in a purely functional build language. The fact that it's purely functional essentially means that building a new configuration cannot overwrite previous configurations. Most of the other features follow from this." Interesting approach. A Linux distribution, sure, but with some very refreshing ideas about system configuration.

Appfour added, among other features, C/C++ support to its new version of AIDE. From Android-IDE, "Now you can write parts of your app or your whole app in C/C++ on your device. AIDE supports the Standard Android NDK toolchain (GCC 4.6 + Bionic, STL, ...). No changes are necessary if you want to build an app developed on a PC with Eclipse. C/C++ development is fully integrated: Build errors appear in the error list and files can easily be navigated to with Go to file. The editor supports C/C++ syntax highlighting."

Ars nails it: "The answer is that Google did announce what amounts to a fairly substantial Android update yesterday. They simply did it without adding to the update fragmentation problems that continue to plague the platform. Glass is getting some love at Google I/O as well. New applications have been released - Facebook, Twitter, Evernote, Elle, Tumblr, and CNN. Perhaps more interesting: the newly announced Google Glass Developer Kit will allow offline applications and direct hardware access - great for hacking and expanding Glass' potential. This kit will really allow hackers to put Glass through its paces.

Absolutely fascinating stuff. I'm a League of Legends player, and to be honest, the community isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be. I'm happy Riot games has the guts to employ science to address the issue.

Windows Phone doubles from a few to twice few, iOS loser market share as its growth is slower than that of the overall market. BlackBerry continues slide into irrelevance.

Plutocracies are nothing new.
Software has almost nothing to do with it. In fact, the FSF probably made the matters worst, because without Android, we wouldn't have HTC devices that are unlockable, and without Linux, the world would be much more closed.
