OPEN SOURCE support for ATI ends with the 9200. Closed source ATI drivers then pick up from there. That's what he meant. The open source part is critical since a small OS like MorphOS won't get closed source driver support from ATI.
This has always been a big problem for alternat OSes. No GPU manufacturer today releases programming specs on the latest GPUs. With ATI, the last GPU alternat OS folks can support is the 9200. With VIA/S3, it is UniChrome. I forget what the last open GPU from nVidia is.

Are you sure? I know for x86 Linux the support STARTS with the 9200, not ends with it.
