A new, test version of Gentoo is now available. Gentoo becomes the first distro to use GCC 3.1 by default. At this point, only a Stage 1 tarball is available, all the rest of the software will need to be recompiled manually.

Slackware 8.1 rc2 is based on gcc3.1 .

It’s not on the web site and so I’d call it “vapor” news.
I compiled Gentoo with gcc 3.x from rebuilding stage-1 before and updated gcc couple time already.
I think this is the point where gentoo shows it’s downside –
after you downloaded latest gcc and finished with emerge updates (both system and world)and rebuilt the kernel (because new sources were published by that time) you have to run ’emerge rsync’ again. Hope you can beat this recursion.
afaik, the stage one is on the mirrors of gentoo so it’s not really “vapor” news, just not official news

Correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t that the idea in general for Gentoo ? Just enough to get the install to a state where it can compile everything else on the target machine ? Sorta like an easier “Linux from Scratch” ?
Yes, this is the idea, but Gentoo also provides already optimized Stage 2 and Stage 3 tarballs. This sentense was to say that only the Stage 1 tarball is available atm.
1.2 only had a stage1 tarball
and this is 1.3test
the first one with gcc3.1
it’s easier to install 1.3test than 1.1a if u want gcc3.1
if u don’t want/need the new gcc there’s no need to bother with this release, as 1.1a has a stage3 wich saves you hours of compilation
