MacNN reports that Apple today released Mac OS X 10.4.2, which the company says delivers overall improved reliability and compatibility for Mac OS X v10.4 and is recommended for all users. It includes fixes for file sharing, authentication, autologin, AirPort/wireless access, several graphics updates, .Mac fixes, Apple’s core applications, and more.

Personally I’ve been holding off because of some of the things mentioned including waking up on different LANs. I don’t see anything referring to Mail 2.0 performance or its other issues.

Here’s what it would be like if this was an update for a Linux distribution.
It wouldn’t have any new features or bug fixes, it would only be security updates.
If you wanted new features you’d have to reinstall the OS for a new version of the “”distro””
For those of you interested in iChat, it is still crap as far as I can see.
Since 10.4 was released, the iChat Agent has always been “not responding” (launch activity monitor, it will flash in red before your eyes).
This is unacceptable, Apple software still not functional after TWO updates.
I have been meaning to use it with an encryption proxy (OTR), I won’t even bother if this thing can’t even keep fro crashing. I’ll stick with Adium.

Audio chats no longer work either. I get bandwidth errors even if I am trying to chat over the lan.
make sure all the ports iChat uses are opened up on your Firewall.
I have tried killing the firewall completely but it still doesn’t help. The Icaat Agent still hangs. Why can’y Apple address this properly?
In the first place, why would it hang with the ports locked? I have Bonjour protocol OFF, and AIM connects just fine. What sort of ports could this be interfering with?
I’ve also removed all widgets from Dashboard (never use them). Firefox is still slow, but MSN Messenger doesn’t cause the machine to pizza wheel anymore. However, I’d forgotten that the one site I use that didn’t work in Safari now does, so I’ve moved back off Firefox…
Its “usable” now. Still prefer to have 10.3.9 back.
i know i should submit this to radar, but i’ve just been to busy at work.. under panther NEC DVD_RW ND-3500AG had zero problems, under tiger, if the disc spins down and goes to sleep, you can’t unmount a disc unlessy ou restart..
yes, I noticed that as well….. I do not understand what the heck was wrong… it made me move back to panther.
I’ve have this issue as well. To force eject the CD-ROM/DVD-ROM I do the following.
1. Open Terminal
2. Issue: “df” This will give you the drive names
3. Issue: hdiutils eject -force /device name

I noticed that in 10.4.1 when you wake up from sleep, sometimes the minimize button doesn’t work for all applications. Really annoying, I hope this fixes it.
i know the wireless patch should be good, i have so many discs now on bnet!
Adium, Safari, itunes, mail, and a few others all seem to work perfectly with the new update. ;p
Time will tell if they fixed the odd bug where the bluetooth daemon would hang on wake every once in a while.
I’ve informed Apple about this bug a few times and hoped they would have fixed this by now. Perhaps it is just my box that has this problem?
1. Open iCal.
2. Click on any editable input, such as the location or notes for an event.
3. Press F11 to view your desktop.
4. The editable input floats mysteriously on the desktop.

I just updated to 10.4.2, and I tested that out, and it didn’t happen to me. Never tried it in 10.4.1, but so far no problems for me. I’m running a 512MB 1.42GHz Mac Mini if that helps.

I’ve had few issues with Tiger 10.4.1. In fact, it’s been the most stable and speedy OS X ever. However, I had one issue on only one of my Macs that was quite odd, which was when I connected to a server via “Recent Servers” in the Apple Menu, the server would connect AND iTunes would launch! And if I tried to click on a folder in the Dock, the folder wouldn’t appear but DVD Player would launch! Aren’t those weird bugs?!?!
That’s all fixed now with 10.4.2, and so far everything including Dashboard seems to be working fine (on one Mac, haven’t done the others yet).

Well, it is a pleasure to announce that apparently, the samba issue (dragging mounted shares to the dock, for example, in order to be able to quick mount ’em) seems to be fixed (i am crossing my fingers).
No strange (?) symbols, nor anything like that. We’ll have to wait and see if Active Directory users have good news.
Hmm, I’m still having the problem where, when the computer wakes up or when I turn it on, it can’t find the wireless network. I never had a problem with this in 10.3

After updating to 10.4.2, if I click on the auto-scroll-down button on my Logitech MX900 mouse, the application switcher pops up. The scroll auto-scroll-up still works as it should.
I have a feeling that I’m going to have to dig into some plist files to fix this one.

Glad to see this is out. Hopefully it fixes my issues, 10.4.1 has been the worst version of OSX I have used. Safari runs worse then ever and has to be restarted daily (gets up to eating 650+meg of ram fast), dashboard has completely died on me, and the box has just lost it’s responsiveness.
Also hope it fixes the DNG file format issues, and maybe just maybe fixed the USB issues so my iPod will mount more often then once in 10 tries (half of which successful crash itunes).
I’ve been waiting for this one, hopefully it gets stuff right.
I’ve updated and it seems to be working fine. No issues so far.
A good rule of thumb – delete preference files from any mis-behaving app:

Bah, well, running 10.4.2 now, and haven’t had it going more an hour, and have only been running one safari window and it’s already up to 100 meg of ram usage, virtual is up to 250 megs. What the heck is wrong with apple, why can’t they fix their stinking browser already.
The widget manager is nice, the widgets are responding again and seam to work. Still would like to see them not be using ~19 meg each.
Glad I have 1.5 gig of ram, or this would be even more annoying.
Bah safari just gulped up 4 more megs of ram in the time I typed this. It’s like webcore is based on Pac-Man.
Well, safari window ran for a bit more while I did some things (haven’t touched it in a hour.
Real Memory was at 822 meg, virtual was over a gig.
Soon as I started using it again the ram usage dropped back down to 661 meg of real memory (odd). But thats back to where it normal goes to. I’ve never seen it get up to 822 before.
Anyrate, since later versions of Panther, the memory leaking I get from Safari has grown with every update.

I opened up this page in Safari, Firefox and Internet Explorer.
The stats were:
Safari: 23.39MB real, 238.44MB virtual
Firefox: 54.1MB real, 421.05MB virtual
Internet Explorer: 32.24MB real, 238.88MB virtual
Although not conclusive by any means, Safari doesn’t look too bad.
BTW: On my machine that has 1GB ram, Mac OS X allocates 7.65GB of virtual memory. Hence, I don’t think we have too much to worry about.
Please don’t get tight on caching and pre-allocation 🙂

I just upgraded (downgraded?) to Tiger 10.4
I have been trying to figure out how to disable dashboard as I know I will never use it.
If you never activate it, it will never run. Dashboard only allocates rescources when you activate it. Drag the icon out of the Dock and thats it.
Why do people keep complaining about the dock? It’s just like any other App, it doesn’t allocate any rescources until you intentionally run it.
If your referring to Quartz 2D Extreme, then unfortunately no.
However, CoreImage (the framework) works very well on my PowerBook.
Everything seems more stable. I have reenabled dashboard, and after half a day, I haven’t seen any footprint growth with my widgets.
for the guy that wants to disable the dash:
defaults write com.apple.dashboard mcx-disabled -boolean YES
killall Dock
change YES to NO to bring it back.
Just because an app has a lot of memory assigned to it, it does not necessarily mean that there are memory leaks.
Remember, Mac OS X is built on-top of UNIX. UNIX systems are designed to use the system’s resources to their fullest. This includes memory. I’m sure that if another app required more memory, then Safari’s allocation would drop (given allocation >= memory in use).
While this is true, Safari eventually crashes after a few days. So I would say it’s a safe bet there is a problem, and it seams to be a very common safari problem.
10.4.2 working fine on my 867MHz PowerBook. Dashboard seems slightly more responsive, AirPort’s stopped giving me quite as much trouble. I’m happy.
Yep, looks like this is it, the update that finally makes the system stable and useful, for me at least.
I admit, I’d just ran 10.4.1 for 3 days actually, but it was noticeably slower than 10.3.9, and this after a clean install. My experience with 10.4.1 was not pleasant at all on a 867 mhz 256 mb PB. However, this update so far seems to have gotten the system quite faster and it looks they finally killed that memory eating monster that got loose on their code before.
So yeah, so far I’m happy with this update
I just did the 10.4.2 update on my G5 and now my Linksys WAG54G PCI card no longer appears under system profiler and my wireless connection no longer works! anyone else have this trouble?

It doesn’t tell you how to have all folders in list view, only columns view. To have all folders in list view you have to buy a third party app, FolderControl, at derman.com (it’s about $25).
I have been waiting with abated breath for this release since the first couple of versions of Tiger had too many bugs for my taste.
10.4.2 is the release that should of been the gold master. Yes, there are still bugs, but Tiger appears to be usable now.
My hope is Apple still keeps the petal to the medal and bangs out the bugs so that 10.4.3 is the release where 99% of the people don’t see any issues.
Tiger is a great OS, and it just needs one more serious bug fixing patch.

I hope it fixes a bug in iPhoto that has annoyed me [but I’ll try the dumping the prefs first].
Also, I noticed that Dashboard started to respond extremely slowly, and command + mouse menu not responding [to the point where the Finder was not responding and had to be restarted].
My virtual memory is at 8.something up to 10 gigs, and I have 1 gig of RAM.
10.3.9 IMHO had a lot more spunk. When the kinks are ironed out of this edition I’ll wait until Leopard reaches 10.5.3 before upgrading. They boys and girls in Cupertino are meeting their deadlines too and then people like to ship some stuff that “we’ll fix in the patch”.
Just updated, and all is well so far. Indeed, I seem to notice an improvement in font smoothing on my PB’s LCD display (“Automatic” setting, which should correspond to Medium hinting). Does anybody have any hard info on possible changes to the font rendering system?

Now, this is rumour only, so take it with a cup of salt; from what I have heard, one of the things holding back Quartz 2D extreme is the font rendering side, and the inconsistancies when 2D extreme is enabled and disabled – maybe what you have noticed is part of them fixing up those problems – I don’t know.
Just as a side issue, it would be nice if Apple were a little more open like SUN, and allow their employees to blog and inform users about what is happening, and why a certain feature isn’t enabled by default.

First time I’ve heard of that bug, and I’ve tried and it just seems not to exist here. But there is something else : pressing F11 before would clear the desktop of any application, now (this isn’t really new), it minimizes the desktop in the bottom left corner of the screen. Don’t know if it’s normal, just that it wasn’t working that way before.

I understand that it is one of their flagship products, but I neither have, nor am going to buy one. I couldn’t care less, I got a Powerbook, that’s all. So why try to make me download that stuff?

I don’t have an iPod, so what is this software doing on my computer anyway? If I chose not to install it, it won’t go away and will be presented to me on the next update. So I was looking for a way to get rid of those notifactions.
Zombie Process already stated that you can choose to not display the update. It is really qute simple enough for an untrained monkey to understand.

Stop trying to come up with excuses as to justify a post to this thread – infact, since you’ve failed to mention *ANYTHING* related to this 10.4.2 update, one even wonders whether you actually own a Mac.
Well, you can’t get rid of them entirely, but you can hide them. Select the update you don’t want to fool with, go to the “updates” menu, and choose “Ignore Update.” This will hide it from view, and the updater won’t bug you about those updates anymore.

I downloaded the update at 415 this morning and I haven’t really seen too much difference, other than the fact that it now takes about 15 seconds longer to boot up. I’m running a Imac flatpanel 800 with 768MB ram and it sure seems snappy. But then again, I upgraded straight from 10.1 to Tiger. So I can’t really comment about the speed of 10.3 but it was like a hardware upgrade for real.
I updated my PB 1.67 GHz 1 GB RAM yesterday to 10.4.2 from 10.4 (from a clean archive and install). iChat had been giving me lots of problems with connections, blurriness, etc. and I have a pretty fast broadband connection (6Mbps/down 384Kbps/up). Anyway, with 10.4.2, everything seems to work great. And I have my firewall on, in stealth mode, with no special ports open for iChat. Note: I am using the AOL IM option in iChat. Overall, framerate is higher, picture quality is up, and connections have been flawless.
Mail fixed a problem with quote levels.
Previously you could not increase or decrease quote levels unless you were replying a message. Now the option is enabled for mails created from scratch.
Working great on my iMac DV, G3 400, 256 megs ram.
Things seem to be a little bit quicker than in 10.3.9, only found 1 bug so far, when mounting a network folder, I accidently hit f12, which brought up a clock widget, I closed the widget, and I could not log into the network share. Had to close out the login completely and remount it. But I’m thinking that might be more of a lack of memory bug.
