By leveraging the strengths of the IBM Z platform’s computing power and resources, IBM z/OS(R) plays an important role in providing a secure, scalable environment for the underlying transformation process on which organizations are embarking to deliver swift innovation.
IBM z/OS V2.5 is designed to enable and drive innovative development to support new hybrid cloud and AI business applications. This is accomplished by enabling next-generation systems operators and developers to have easy access and a simplified experience with IBM z/OS, all while relying on the most optimal usage of computing power and resources of IBM Z servers for scale, security, and business continuity.
This is far beyond my comfort level.
The update is actually straight forward. You now get a GUI package manager, you get a browser based desktop and you get to write less code in assembler, but you still have to write some. Everything to do with the 21st century has been automated. like updates, cyber security and cloud. There is a special “sort” CPU and a new “job” launcher. . Its like a 50’s science fiction movie set in 2021.
IBM has a really interesting set of conundrums – marketing to the high powered non technical decision makers but also sending coded technical messages to the folks who actually know what a computer is. And then there is the issue of IBM admins hitting retirement age in the year 2000.
I bet this OS is incredibly efficient at getting out of the way of “jobs”. it’s an OS with no ego.
You’ve got to hand it to IBM: no one else can take a straight-forward set of release notes and turn it into a complex set of corporate blurbs and buzzwords the way they do.
Ha, I love how they named their file system zFS…
The amount of buzzwords and corporate speak in that announcement was awesome. Good ol’ IBM.
In their defense, IBM’s zFS did exist before Sun’s.
