In the next few days those using M1 Macs will be updating to Big Sur 11.5, blissfully ignorant of how, as an admin user, their Mac could refuse to update. Because now, in addition to regular users, admin users and root, there’s another class of admin user: the Owner. Let me explain.
Just something to be aware of.
So, to summarize…
he’s complaining about problems associated with a beta firmware update with beta software and two different versions of macOS 11 on an M1 machine.
You wanna say, he did use the mac wrong? 😉
That’s a good question. Installing macOs on an external drive is something that’s never occurred to me, so I can’t say if it’s a bug or what. I think most people have given up on dual booting since hypervisors are easy to obtain these days, so maybe?
In the very specific scenario of installing and booting macOS from an external drive which 99% of people are never going to attempt. XD It’s a corner case even though the author acts as if it’s perfectly normal. It’s an interesting corner case, but a corner case none the less.
Article score: 1/10. 9 points deducted for the sensationalist, click-bait title and and not acknowledging it’s outside of how most people are going to use the system.
From the article:
These may seem elaborate and esoteric, but in the next few months we’re all expecting Apple to release more Apple Silicon Macs aimed well above the lower end of the market, where users often live more adventurous lives and have Macs which are far from vanilla.
He does have a point. It will only a few number of users, but it can be a big pain.
But this is just MacOS he’s talking about – who knows how it will affect efforts to run alternatives
I would think one problem is that apple silicon macOS updates probably include a firmware component like iOS.
maybe any alternative os wont be effected,
The Owner of the machine and the user is always Apple of course. 🙁
“It’s not a sale, it’s a license”. It’s stuff like this that makes me buy grey-market software keys with no remorse. I am breaking your 60-page EULA anyway, so why not?
