Matchbox is an Open Source base environment for the X Window System running on non-desktop embedded platforms such as handhelds, set-top boxes, kiosks and anything else for which screen space, input mechanisms or system resources are limited. Information on the 1.0 release is here.
It is nice to see the project making progress but the bottom line is that Qtopia looks better and has a better end user experience. Yeah I know that it’s controlled by Trolltech but it is under GPL and is a pretty mature platform. I really don’t see the appeal of Matchbox over Qtopia ( plus I am more of a c++ guy … )
Well, it seems that Nokia, and others, do see the appeal.
I’m using OpenBox on my VNC session, and love it. Limited, yet useful. Haven’t try MB yet. 🙂
this seems like the perfect thing for my sony vaio where the screen space is limited. http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1759,1754438,00.asp
Woha. Expensive toy! Do Linux kernel supports most of the stuff of this tablet? 🙂
I’d rather buy a Nokia 770.
yeah. I just haven’t got the touchscreen to work with xorg 7. it worked in xorg 6.8 though. i’m also getting the source for maemo (powers the nokia 770) that should be cool. I’d really like to run matchbox in xgl too ;-p
i found this http://repository.maemo.org/stable/1.1/i386/Maemo_Dev_Platform_RS_v… incase anyone else wants to try maemo.
