T2 SDE 2.2.0-RC has been released. “T2 SDE is not just a common Linux distribution – it is a flexible open source System Development Environment or Distribution Build Kit. T2 allows the creation of custom distributions with bleeding edge technology, up-to-date packages and integrated support for cross compilation. Currently the Linux kernel is normally used – but we are expanding to Minix, Hurd, OpenDarwin and OpenBSD – more to come.” This new release adds, among many other things, support for Intel Macs.

Yes. I have not actually used it, so ymmv, but if it works as advertised, you pick your target, and then compile. Compilation is lengthy, it can take days on reasonably fast processors. But at the end, you should end up with your own distro for your own purpose.
I am not sure how practical it is. Do you really want your own distro, for your own company for instance? Support issues and so on. You can imagine however, if you have lots of time, and a bunch of MMxs, and no money, well, you could roll your own for them. Amazingly ingenious and what a committment from the guys who did it!
Very interesting market development too, in that it shows what unpredictable possibilities are out there that open source allows to be explored, and closed source walls off.

With Gentoo you can roll your own distro with whatever options you want. You now have options for BSD or Linux. You can also create custom LiveCDs.
I’ve read the ABOUT section on T2’s website but I don’t see anything that really differentiates it from Gentoo.

I’m sure I’ll get modded down for being offtopic but OSNews readers are getting pretty vindictive and self righteous. Can anyone give me a valid reason as to why either of my previous comments got modded down? It seems there is no other reason than disagreement. In fact No one has yet bothered to answer my questions but they feel the need to mod me down instead. Even with the mandatory user accounts the moderation system sucks. It has become a petty and anonymous way to enact revenge on those who hold differing viewpoints. I’ll admit that a lot of posters, including me, can be a bit edgy in our comments sometimes, but people don’t even respond to valid comments, they just mod down because they don’t like what you have to say.
When the moderation first started I got modded down on occaision for things that did not deserve it but it seems to be much more rampant. I find myself modding comments back up to reasonable levels much more than I used to because posters have become so thin-skinned and sensitive, that they can’t take valid criticisms. It’s either that or this place has been overrun by middle school know-nothing-know-it-alls.
I still like coming to OSNews but not as much as I used to because people tend to freak out and make all kinds of assumptions about your thought process without even asking. Most of my comments that have been modded down previously were because people wanted to argue against comments I didn’t even make. People don’t read anymore they just judge. It’s pretty sad.
Hopefully I’m not the only one that feels this way. Maybe something can be done about the moderation system before this place is completley swallowed by immature, sensitive, vindictive low lifes. There used to be intelligent conversation in some of the threads (you’re always going to have some flamewars), I would like to get back to that.

Actually the first version was called Rock Linux, and it came *before* Gentoo. And T2 is a fork of Rock… in any case, even if Gentoo is there, does it mean there should be no other distros with similar ideas?
*ACTUALLY* … I think you would find FreeBSD (Portage) to predate both Rock Linux and Gentoo … but given that FOSS *nix “distribution/package-management” evolved from an origin of “make install”, I won’t claim FreeBSD is the first … they just made it better.
I read the quickstart, it’s more like an “auto-LFS” than Gentoo. I’m not sure I’d personally run it, but these kinds of projects have their way of giving future free software developers their start, and I’m all for getting more people involved.

That’s kinda funny because for a while that’s the exact same way people described Gentoo, as a sort of auto-LFS. Can you understand my confusion now?
