The Etoile team has published a progress update on the project. They are currently preparing the release of version 0.2 of the Etoile live CD, but on top of that, they are also busy developing new applications. A font manager, an alt+tab application switcher, hot corners, and more. “Étoilé intends to be an innovative GNUstep based user environnement built from the ground up on highly modular and light components with project and document orientation in mind.”
I really like Etoile and I really hope they succeed. I’m currently learning Objective-C and hope to contribute to the project in the future.
It’ll be good to have a full GNUStep based enviroment instead of bit and pieces thrown together on top of WindowMaker. I’m looking forward to it’s contiuned growth.
While Window Maker is the recommended window manager for GNUstep, Etoile does have its own window manager, called Azalea (which is based on OpenBox, IIRC).
This can only be said for the real go getter, I have a son and am planning to put him through college. I’ve had to struggle, but in the struggle, it’s made me a better person and more of what I’ve become.

It looks like GNUStep is finally getting somewhere. Étoilé is attracting attention, and that’s something very important for any open/free source project.
Now all GNUStep needs is some more applications and a better integration with GNOME and KDE and the unix desktop has it’s third major player. Beautiful!
That’s the beauty of GNUStep, since it’s similar/compatible to OpenStep/Cocoa you get a lot of apps practically for free. Just read this from the Etoile blog to get the point:
>> TermX: a terminal emulator ported from macosxterm.
>> It works both on GNUstep and Cocoa.
I don’t know how many projects are out there for NEXTStep/OpenStep/Cocoa/GNUStep but freshmeat lists 364 Objective C projects right now.
