What a great move from Sun Microsystems. Innotek’s VirtualBox is a great piece of software, great contender to VMWare, watch out!!!
Sun is making a lot of really bold and incredibly intelegent moves. Virtual box is an amazing VM i am interested to see where all these leads to.
This is good for us. I wish Sun could by Microsoft and then they would surely open source Windows, Office, etc. The more companies Sun buy, the better for us! :o)
And after they open source windows they will start giving away money on the street.
If SUN bought Microsoft, dont you believe they would open source Windows, Office, etc? SUN would open source everything else in their product portfolio Solaris, Java, SPARC CPU, ZFS, DTrace, etc etc etc, except Windows, Office, etc? Is that so, you mean?
not that it matters, as we really do not want the winblows and Microsoftoffice code. About the only people who want are people making aides to blind people, as this would surely be a side effect of looking at it…
Why would they open source windows? How on earth would that be any good for them? Selling windows means a lot of profit, open sourcing it means no profit.
Why SUN would open source Windows, Office, OOXML, etc – if SUN bought Microsoft? Well… SUN has opened everything it has? Why would SUN behave differently if they acquire Microsoft? Do you mean SUN behaves irrationally, open sourcing somethings, but refuses to open source the rest?
It sure took time to open Java, several years, but SUN had to prove that they owned every line of code. That took time. They will surely open everything left also. And they will surely open everything they buy also. Otherwise that wouldnt fit into SUNs new strategy; open everything it has.
I would say that after releasing sources of Windows they would start spreading Bubonic plague on streets

Personally, I love VirtualBox. Unlike VMWare, they make file sharing easy (no SAMBA needed) and their interface is a lot cleaner than VMWare (which has borders and GUI elements takes up far too much real-estate if the resolution of your virtual machine is close to your desktop resolution).
There are only two things that give VMWare the edge:
1) Stability. VirtualBox with Windows 2000 can crash. This doesn’t happen with VMWare
2) VM file portability. With VMWare, I can make one Virtual machine, and make a backup or alternate version or move it to another machine simply by copying the directory. VirtualBox requires you to use a reindexing tool and reattachment which isn’t 100% hasslefree.
Sun will definitely fix (1) and that may be enough to push me off of VMWare, but I’m really hoping that Sun also take cares of (2) also since it is a maintenance issue.

Innotek? Isn’t that the company in Office Space?
Maybe Sun will finally get those problems with the TPS reports straightened out.
Won’t happen until they can address the PC LOAD LETTER issue.

Don’t forget the Solaris Zones or BrandZ Zones running Linux
Who knows what Sun is anymore….
They used to sell machines with Sparc processors running Solaris….now they’re selling AMD processor machines running Windows or Linux. They have became a Dell / HP / Gateway etc.
Hadn’t you heard? It’s been in development for a while.

I love VirtualBox, been using it for over a year.
They seem to be on a roll all by themselves adding features and such.
Will this slow them down? Speed them up? Whow knows.
I really don’t know what to make of this buyout.
Suddenly I found myself in situation where most of my favorite software comes from one single company – Sun Microsystems. I use and like Java, I love Netbeans 6, I run Windows in Virtualbox and use both – PostgreSQL an MySQL for my work and hobby. I’m waiting to see what they are creating with Project Indiana…
