Linus Torvalds has a sense of humour. “Youtube no workee – Fedora 9 not usable for wife.” So begins a bug he filed on Fedora’s Bugzilla. “I didn’t try a lot of videos, but I couldn’t find a single one that actually worked. And what’s the internet without the rick-roll? Some just show a light gray background, some give the play buttons etc, but show only a black screen even when the red ball at the bottom moves along. Steps to reproduce: 1. Install current Fedora 9; 2. Rick-roll!; 3. No profit!” Thanks to Fefes Blog and dr_evil in #haiku for pointing this one out.
.. Linus always had a good sense of humor. I was just very direct and in your face. And he lacks a lot of political correctness ( Calling people interface nazis and stuff .. ) but that mainly just offends germans and americans i guess.
I would never call somebody a nazi on the interwebs, cause they never forget. But i still think Linus is a cool guy.
Just exspect “Supergeek meets South Park” and you won´t be surprised
And btw: Why doesn´t Fedora ship Gnash??
No, don’t mind. In Germany, we don’t have any political opinion, and “Nazi stuff” is an absolute no-go here, you are not welcome to talk about it in public (the same way death or war are no-go topics here), just a sidenote in history classes. Still enough every German and all his descendants get ashamed, but not enough to know anything in particular. Getting information without propaganda interferences isn’t that easy. Strange contradiction… forgetting it and still being guilty… Deniying history is much better than learning from it, isn’t it? (This was off-topic, I know.)
Many real Nazis from Germany had to find this out, too. 🙂 But you’re right. The term “Nazi” implies many things you should not attribute to a person, not even for “joy purposes”, because the Nazis, their henchmen and followers have brought much sorrow towards their victims. And that’s no joy. But you may still poke fun at their stupidity. 🙂
actually I do not feel offended as I simply put it in the context Linus is talking about and thereby understand what he’s trying to say. It is unfortunate to get too hung up on words.
German sensitivities and taboos are a PITA, but perhaps I’ve just been away for too long, and this partly is why. People need to get a life.
Fedora 9 Beta installs swfdec by default instead of Gnash since swfdec uses gstreamer. Which means Linus, a long term Fedora user actually got the video working by installing the gstreamer-plugins-ffmpeg. Refer the bug report for details.
Gnash can also use GStreamer.
Well yes but it is not very mature yet and doesn’t have hooks for installing additional codecs easily like swfdec does.
She’s a six-time female Finnish national karate champion.
You mean, she would finnish us off?
oh, that’s soooo good
Now all we need is for someone to port Mortal Komabat to KDE.
As far as I can tell, Linus Torvalds has ALWAYS had a sense of humo(u)r.
check http://www.kernel.org/pub/linux/kernel/v2.6/ChangeLog-2.6.18 if you don’t believe me; that kernel was released on ‘talk like a pirate day’
And then there’s his quote (at some point) about Linux doing infinite loops even faster than the competition…
And so on, and so on.
Theo de Raadt develops a temper and Hans Reiser has an abrasive personality. More at 6…
Sorry for the trolling, but this is too fun.
Is He actually using Fedora!? hahahahahahaha…ha
It looks like the ffmpeg packages weren’t yummy enough. ha ha ha
I’ve got a BUG too! Debian unstable package maintainers made it too easy to get right so I didn’t get to file a bug like real kernel hackers do! ha ha ha ha
Just be nice and don’t mod me below -1, please. hahaha

You would be surprised of how much kernel developers use Fedora (and red hat before that), and not Debian or things like that. Kernel hackers don’t want to spend their time configuring a distro, they want a ready-to-use distro that makes easy to install a kernel development environment.
Like the original poster, this makes me laugh hard. Do you realize that you’re describing Debian and not Fedora?

“Some people have told me they don’t think a fat penguin really embodies the grace of Linux, which just tells me they have never seen an angry penguin charging at them in excess of 100mph. They’d be a lot more careful about what they say if they had.”

I love the sheer candidness of this whole thing. How many Mac or Windows users can say they’ve read a similar online exchange from the founders of their respective OS camps? Apart from the time I bumped into Alan Cox in a restaurant, this has to be my most favorite linux moment.
Gates had his moments too. Remember the farewell video? It was quite hilarous.
to renounce his evil ways and use Debian.
I prefer Debian myself (especially over Fedora), and I’m sure you were joking. However, I must say that Red Hat is one of the finest and least evil companies I have ever seen. Because of this, I would probably choose the phrase “foolish ways” instead of “evil ways”.
I find it comforting that Linus has similar problems to me (both software and hardware, software can’t get youtube to play and hardware – wife) – makes me feel that I might not be an idiot.
What, Linus is a geek and spews off internet memes? Shocking!
Although this: “Maybe this makes somebody go “duh! you’re doing it wrong!” sort of give the impression that he just discovered internet memes and is eager to spout them whenever he can.
Any volunteer to goatse him? Just in case he doesn’t know it yet.
I think Linux Torvalds is a pretty cool guy, eh writes kernels and doesn’t afraid of anything.
… but at what price?
Expected results:
Rick Astley in all his glory!
He seems to have lost any musical taste he may have had.
If anyone doesn’t know who Rick Astley is, please don’t go on YouTube to find out, if you really must, atleast unplug your speakers and monitor first.
I would have said that the inability to play Rick Astley videos is an advanced feature, rather than a bug. In fact you could probably say the same about most of the content on YouTube.
*BTW, I agree with all the posters who say he always had a sense of humour.

“I know sound works, because amarok and other apps have no problem. Any clues?”
I think the high point of the bug reports are the south park and rick-roll references. Does this mean rick rolling is mainstream now? The next thing you know he’ll be bel airing us in release announcements.
And hackers are famous for their wicked sense of humor, even Linus, “I can’t code everything for u people” Torvalds. Ha!
PS to Gortra — Red Hat is a great company.
