“The newest version of the GNOME open source desktop will not be ready in time to ship with Solaris 9 next year, but it will be included with a subsequent Solaris 9 quarterly update, a Sun executive told searchSolaris… Sun’s ultimate goal is to make GNOME 2.0 the new default desktop for Solaris. But there will be a period of transition she said, where users will be able to choose between GNOME and CDE.” Full story at searchSolaris.com.
Is Gnome really reliable enough for an OS like Solaris? Doesnt Solaris have a reputation as being Rock Solid?
Personally, I am not a great fun of GTK+ or Gnome. I like QT a lot better as a C++ OOP toolkit, but that does not mean that I like KDE (I don’t). My personal preference when I am running unix is <A HREF=”http://www.windowmaker.org“>WindowMaker.
I still would prefer Gnome 2.0 over CDE.
At my school we run either Solaris 8 or Deebian Linux on the PS’s. There’s always alot af unused SUN maschines and absolutely no unused Linux pc’s. And that’s because CDE stins when you want to use it for desktop purposes.
To check out a CDE-alike for Linux there is always <A HREF=”http://www.xfce.org“>XFCE, which emulates CDE’s gui and design. It is not that bad, but it is not great either. And it is also based on GTK+ as Gnome is…
Kim N. T. aren’t there ways to use Gnu replacements for CDE?
I agree with Daryl. . . gnome??? is solaris an OS for “pretty email clients” and fancy icons on the desktop???
for the solaris 8 sun ensures “easy” instalation and a desktop friendly os, i think solaris 7 has easier and faster install program and the same desktop than solaris 8. . . ok, the media player written in java is a “state of the art”, but . . maybe sun is so worried for the desktop market.
and of course the superiority of QT over GTK is a interesting issue, i think sun can pay a corporate QT license or some like this. . .
Personally, I’ve always *liked* CDE. I think of Gnome as kind of a pimped up Windows…..
