From SkyOS‘ Robert Szeleney: “Finally I released the first SkyOS SDK and some documents with which it will be possible to develop SkyOS applications and libraries. Just follow the new Developer link. This SDK includes all needed header files (libraries and kernel), libraries and the source code of the desktop, panel and GiConfig application.”
I still can’t get SkyOS to boot up because, though it mounts the correct drive, it can’t seem to locate setup.app. 🙂 And still I wait for 3.9.6 which has the fix for this bug.

This is good. Perhaps we will start seeing more application support for SkyOS.
this troll is giving my domain-name a bad reputation… please don’t think all people from rogers.com ISP troll
When I get a PC within the next week or two, I might try it. Maybe I should develop software for it since it looks like a wide open market, although the userbase isn’t very big.
why would i support any OS that installed and booted off of a winsucks created partition? at least put it on something with an inherent security layer. ext3, reister FS, BeFS, etc…
my .02, if you don’t like it, don’t read it…

Hello, sorry if this is a dumb question, but is SkyOS open source? I’ve looked at the web site and couldn’t find any links to source code, so I’m guessing that it isn’t
Thanks!
Duh ! Implementing a simple FAT-FS in a home made OS is about 10 times easier than any other common file system (and if you do a whole OS, then you try to optimize your time everywhere), plus if the guy run Windows, he can manage files from his OS.
So what’s your point, troll ?
Hi! I never heard about SkyOS and I’m curious about it. What advantages has it over Windows and Linux? It’s easy to setup the system and to install software?
Always looking for a good replacement for Win 98 :>)
Fixed a major FAT32 filesystem bug. On some systems it was not possible
to load the setup application. This should be fixed now.
Major GUI speed improvements by reducing message sending operations.
e.g. No more mouse moved messages are sent to windows which didn’t an explicit GI_EnableMouseTracking(…).
SkyGI can handle and display different sized cursor images now.
Fixed SkyGI GI_child_window(…) function.
Implemented user-memory file systems which makes it possible to access memory of user tasks by opening a file. (e.g. open(“/umfs/SkyKruzer_CurrentWindowContent”, O_RDONLY) to get the current displayed window in the browser).
so now it works (23th of Januari)
What has happened to OSNews recently, the standard of commenting is going right down.
SkyOS is a hobby operating system, it is not intended to replace Windows (not yet) if only because of the lacks of applications and drivers.
Robert wrote this for the fun of it and now it has achieved a high enough level of completeness, he took the time to write a SDK so people can help contribute to his project.
Maybe OSNews should be renamed to OSDeveloperNews to ward away all the slashdotters.
Open your minds people, some talented people actually enjoy coding and like to see people use the results.
Hi Daryl, I’m afraid that your comments go for my ones, and I think you are wrong.
I undestand that SkyOS isn’t a finished OS, but I’m happy knowing new OSes aimed to the desktop. It isn’t useful to write an OS if it’s very similar to already available OSes, so I was interested on knowing its strengths. You know, I don’t have enougth computers, nor time enougth, to try every OS I find interesting. If a hobby OS fits my needs, it will be a good replacement (or maybe a complement) for Windows, or for any other OS I use (Linux in my case). It’s always useful to know alternatives.
Maybe you see OSNews as an experts-only resource, but it isn’t this way. I know nothing about programming but I visit OSNews because it’s useful for me. It keeps me current about new releases of OSes I’m interested on and about OSes in development that I could find good for me. So if it’s useful for me and I’m just a desktop user, OSNews is NOT only for OS developers.
As you said, “some talented people actually enjoy coding and like to see people use the results”, but you don’t do easy that non-developers try some kinds of sofware. A desktop OS should be open to desktop users, not only experts. That’s what I think.
If you check the download links you’ll see that, though the bug has been fixed, a new download with the fix hasn’t been released. If you go to the download page, you’ll see that the most recent release is from December 5th. Since this bug wasn’t fixed till January 23rd, obviously this is still a problem.

Incase you’re wondering, SKYos isn’t opensource. The author was afraid it would be packaged and sold if he gave away the code. I don’t think he knows about the GPL or LGPL or BSD Licenses. Someone ought to send that guy a link.
–dave
First, why do you think I’m afraid the source will be sold?
And second, do you really think I don’t know the GPL / LGPL license?
You know the atheos project?
That’s exactly the reason why I don’t release the source. Some guys just take your source, fork it, and release it under a new name. ( I think kurt isn’t very happy about that.)
That’s it what I really don’t want to happen to SkyOS. There should be just one version. No forks, no different distributions.
Robert.
“If a hobby OS fits my needs, it will be a good replacement”
Well that’s the big problem from people here. You have to understand that ANY hobby OS will :
1) NEVER fits your needs
2) NEVER be a good replacement
Get over it guys. Stuff like SkyOS are only for developers curiosity about great works. Period. There’s NO intend to become anything useful. If it ever do, then we can start talking about issues and needed features. But until then, please just enjoy what the guy do, or just ignore it…
drfelip, don’t take my message personnaly, actually I’m talking to a lot of people on this forum 🙂
Know why Atheos was forked? How about Kurt ceasing work on it for almost a year? How about no updates in YEARS? he licensed it under the GPL so he has no cause for complaint when people get tired of waiting and go ahead and do their own thing.
