Ugly article. An installworld and installkernel with a redefined $DESTDIR were quite enough to build a base system, a make distrib-dirs and make distribution with the same variable under /usr/src/etc will do the rest. Then we can copy with the pkg_* tools our installed packages, or install them from ports by hand (is it really useful a script with all the ports I want?).

i guess this project was derived from “linux from scratch”.
if was, then “installworld” or gentoo’s system is NOT what this systems want.
in fact one of it’s principles is to DO EVERYTHING YOURSELF.
why? to learn how things work, to have total control about what gets compiled and how, and to be independent of any distribution peps who actually take decisions from you.

I think the real clever part of this concept was simply the idea of having two seperate “root” partitions on his machine, and installing into the other one. That way, for the cost of a few GB of disk space, it’s “safe” and “easy” to do a complete, Format and Reinstall with little risk or damage to a main system. Just ensure that your “real” data is on a completely different partition.

In regards to John Galt and his questionable intelligence, I submit that he named himself after an Ayn Rand character, which automatically invalidates any possible claims to intelligence that he might have.

The fact that you use the name of the Atlas Shrugged protagonist as your monikor to prove that you’ve read at least one of Ayn Rand’s excellent books, and may even agree with objectivist ideology, but then make irrational (ignorant, racists, etc…) comments about the computing ability of ALL Italians, negates the possibility of you having any intelligence beyond that necessary to breath, as well as proving you have absolutely no idea what Rand was talking about.

If you go to LFS and follow their instructions, it’s a wide variety of get this here, get that there, find this, unpack that, build those.
What makes this BFS (not to be confused with, you know, BFS) interesting is simply that most of the LFS instructions aren’t necessary in that regard. BSD comes “complete”, one stop shopping and all that.
Just thought I’d point that little difference between the two out.
