I don’t remember who have recently spook about a “final” release for Mandrake, but those words may unfortunatly be prophetics.
Unfortunatly because this is not fair for the good work of Mandrake team. This distro is at the same level than Debian, RH or Suse. You may discuss some points here or here, but those 4 are exactly the same product.
True, Mandrake have suffered of a bad choice from their managment, and, i am sure of this, thay have suffered also of all the very bad publicity from the Linux trolls. please note that this “community” ( i mean the trolls specialized in the worst “advocacy” of Linux ) have done absolutly nothing when Mandrake had problems with money…
So the question remains, if, i do not hope so, Mandrake sinks, who will be the next poor victim of our “brave” Linux trolls ?
Don’t get too excited, Xavier, Mandrake’s not gone yet.
I’m one of those Linux trolls that actually gave money to join the Mandrake club. . . there are a lot of us and we haven’t quit yet. If Mandrake recoups, cuts costs, and shores up its business model, then it will have been worth it. They ran like a dot.com for too long.
The rc-1 release of Mandrake looks fantastic (best release I’ve seen so far). Although Eugenia seems to dislike KDE3.1, I find that it is much faster than any KDE/gnome so far, certainly outpaces gnome in features and stability (on my machine), and outpaces windows and macos in file-finder functionality (excellent previewing, file-association, etc. etc.)
What sort of magical OS do you run Xavier? You seem fond of thinking that the Linux folks are off the mark. . . If you are a Windows user, you’ll be upset to see the upcoming screenshots of the next version of the Windows client (It looks like linux – with full panels, multi-desktops, etc.).
Don’t get too excited, Xavier, Mandrake’s not gone yet.
Disappearance of Mandrake is not stimulating for me. But disappearance of Linux trolls will be the greatest new i can imagine applaud ;-)))
What sort of magical OS do you run Xavier? A “multi” OS. I’m fascinated by process-sharing, so i used w2k and Linux ( rh, mandrake, peanut linux, gentoo, and i need to give a look to *bsd, lfs and debian ) for my own test. As professional, mainly aix solaris mvs and, one more time but avoid it today…, w2K. This can make any difference ?
Am I the only one who thinks Mandrake looks too cartoony and not professional? Even their install program just “feels” like a second rate product. I acknowledge their work, but it doesn’t have the “polish” I feel from Red Hat or SuSE.
I think this opinion may be culturally based. I have heard it many times from Americans, but many Europeans seem to like the look. It’s difficult to please everyone without looking dull and boring.

Whenever I hear people say this, they never give specific examples. It’s always a very esoteric, can’t describe it kind of expression. It is an impression and an opinion nothing more. It reflects your tastes and preferences. I actually prefer the Blue colorscheme of Mandrake to the Red and White installer from Red Hat. I find Red Hat to “feel” to bland and incoherent for my taste. It doesn’t seem intuitive to me.
SuSE I do like.
It is all a matter of opinion. You have an opinion of what you like, everyone else has an opinion of what they like. There is not only one way. It seems so many think the Microsoft way; that there is only one right way to make it work, or make it look.

Adam : have you tried RC1 ? The graphics (especially install) have completely changed
And no, they are not dead.

After reading the features of this product I had to ask:
Why would a “Corporation” need a Linux Router.. why not a Cisco router?
Why wuld a “Corporation” need a software Linux firewall.
The list goes on..
this product seems like an all in one small/medium buisness.. not corporate.
my 2 cents..
