Google built a prototype of a censored search engine for China that links users’ searches to their personal phone numbers, thus making it easier for the Chinese government to monitor people’s queries, The Intercept can reveal.
The search engine, codenamed Dragonfly, was designed for Android devices, and would remove content deemed sensitive by China’s ruling Communist Party regime, such as information about political dissidents, free speech, democracy, human rights, and peaceful protest.
Don’t be evil.
Don’t give Trump any ideas….
“Don’t be evil” Too late, that train done left the station. Google has been evil for sometime
As long as it’s in the US’ interests, nothing can be evil. Not even for controlling bananas, oil or their own citizens’ private data.
agreed.
Don’t use Google directly. Google/Alphabet has clearly gone over to the dark side. It is almost as if they want to become a real Big Brother.
When you have to give up principles in order to make money, it’s time to opt for not making money.
Sadly, this line of thought is not compatible with corporate business.
Shareholders’ benefit is important (pension funds) and since money have no odor…
Where did we go wrong?
Greed.
Yep. Business colleges have spent the better part of four decades teaching “greed is good” and “only the bottom line matters”. Is it any wonder businesses have changed to reflect that?
Deregulation ?
Do you really think it was “better” in the past?…
Perhaps the richest top 1% wasn’t owning 50% of the world’s wealth…
I don’t know… how do you count absolute ~monarchies, aristocracy/nobility and serfdom etc., which were quite common in the past?
(in Soviet Russia, the wealthy own you?)
If so, things haven’t changed that much, only names changed. How can people accepted being paid with the minimum wages when your boss is one of, if not the, richest man in babylon ? Modern slavery, but yeah, even slaves can buy an iPhone now, such progress for mankind.
Business was never about technology itself but what you can achieve with it.
Not being ready for “prime time” for 10 .. 20 years would be a better way to put this into perspective.
If you’re making a Google search from an Android phone they’re already tying that to your phone number, email address, device identifiers, location, IP address and various other hooks.
Point at China as a dystopian nightmare but many in the west are already under such apparatus, by choice!
