Now the press release is up, RC3 is really 9.1-Final (OSNews had the golden master for a week now, as you read in our yesterday’s review). Do you have to be a member in order to take advantage of the update service…. (i.e. patches, etc) ? I have not used mandrake in about 3 years so I am unfamilar with the membership benefits. After reading all of the reviews, I thought I would give it a shot.

Mandrake Software is 100% free software, as well as the updates.
Will be getting this when I get home. It’s a shame, too, I was halfway past a Stage 2 Gentoo install.

This is beautiful. Without a doubt, the Linux desktop has never looked this good or worked this well.
I think Linus was on to something when he said that the Linux Desktop in 2006 will kick ass. I mean, look how good things are NOW.

This is it. I never felt so productive with a Linux distro before, Mandrake did this one right! With URPMI set up right Mandrake kicks most other distro’s asses. Please support them if you can, I know I will!

Did not work…I still have an old secure kernel that brings me a broken distro when I try to use it. I have the latest regular kernel though. Will try to re-update…

Hey, NTFS resizing is now supported. This (the lack of it) has been a huge barrier to Linux adoption since it requiries people to purchase expensive programmes like Partition Magic or give up Windows.
I’m in the process of downloading all three iso’s right now, and currently my estimated download time is just under four hours. Considering the popularity of Mandrake, I don’t think that is to bad.

this is not your regular user, this is a mandrake affiliate who is consistantly posting crappy ads about mandrake, and almost never forgets to trow in a “redhat sux”, you can trace back if you want

i have used mandrake a long time and actually liked it (boxed set and vip club member, but since i don’t have time to develop anymore, i don’t make use of my free club membership), i will even download the iso’s and try this one out.

It sounds like 9.1 has a lot to offer, but isn’t this the same company who is in serious financial trouble?
The distro does look appealing, but the thought that Mandrake might not be around 6 months from now is a little disheartening.
The kernel does not update automatically. You have to use urpmi kernel-secure, then it will be installed, not upgraded. It is always an install with a kernel, then rebooting on the new kernel, you cannot update a current kernel. Lilo entries are automatically updated though.

How come one of the kernels is not upgraded and all the others are? Especially if, when you reboot, everything is broken.
Just instale dit yesturday, I learned from pclinuxonline.com taht RC 3 was final and gave it a try. It is very good, consistent and I did not face any of the problems Eugenia did such as windows font problems.

Did you use the Advanced button for the Fonts installation or simply you used the “Get Windows fonts”? I was talking about the Advanced button.
Don’t even try install it if you’ve got a USB Mouse
This is the best release I have seen from any distro. Mandrake Rulez. I just hope they get a lot of support from all the MDK lovers like myself. Just this month I renew my membership.
I don’t know about 9.1, but for 9.0, try:
rmmod usbmouse
modprobe usbmouse
worked for me.
By the way, use other mirrors, like metalab, and get the RC3 versions. They are the same as the final one, as the MD5 sums show.

I used Mandrake for a long time and spent money to support them. I now wish I have used my money to support Debian, the disto I now use. I wonder why should someone use Mandrake? Mandrake always trys to make sure everyone knows that their distro is the easyiest distro to install. Furthermore, one of their packages URPMI is suppose to be a reliable package management tool. Not True!
If you want to experience quality package management tools then use Debian. Best of all you do not have to worry about a company on the brink of going out of business.
This time Mandrake has brought out a polished and nice distro. I have the latest hardware and it supports it! Cool! I use Linux since 97, and for most of the time I used Slackware. I say used, becuase I’m switching to Mandrake. By now my learning experience with Linux might be complete, and Mandrake helps me be productive. I hope tought that the company will not go to hell. Maybe other fellow slackware users will say I’m crazy, and maybe I am. I just have time anymore for slack, thats all, but it is and will 4 ever remain my favourite distro. With that said, I would like to say one more thing: I would NEVER put mandrake linux on a server, that place is reserved for slackware or freebsd…but the desktop is something diferent…:)
PS: It’s worth to support them, but I will continue to support slack by buing CD’s every release:)

in one place i saw three 650 mb files
at another place 699,649, and 456??
which verion is correct???

IIRC, everything Mandrake does is GPL (someone correct me if I’m wrong). So, if the company goes out of business, the software still lives. However, as long as Mandrake SA is still in existence, I’ll gladly pick up a PowerPack edition now and then (I paid $70 for 9.0 at BestBuy) to keep a concerted (and productive) development effort going. 9.1 installfest this weekend…w00t
I cant even get past the initial install splash screen from the cd when booting up. I have to use the text mode installer with my GF4/4200 8X. strange no?
urpmi has pretty much all the functionality of apt. but you have to use it right. it’s not going to do dependency resolution for non-Mandrake RPMs, etc. stick to Mandrake repositories and it will see you right. combined with meta-packages, urpmi can do some pretty cool stuff. for instance – install Mandrake without installing GNOME. then do “urpmi gnome2”, and all of GNOME gets installed. neat, no? =)
That URPMI, no doubt it is great at installing software and fulfilling dependencies. Sure it is as good as APT. But then, is it as good as aptITUDE?
This program remembers which packages were installed to fulfill dependencies, so if you Uninstall some software, it automatically removes any packages not needed anymore. Can URPMI do this too?
I ask this as unneeded packages took up much disk space in Suse 6.4 and 7.3, and as unneeded DLL’s seem to take up much disk space in my Windows installation.

Well the updates are free but the updates are only on the servers barely a year. So after the next version of Mandrake is released a few months afterward the updates for 9.1 will expire and if you want anything patched you’ll have to download the new ISOs. It makes sense, saves them money and time, but really annoying if you have an older machine that can barely run 8.0.

Not true. All updates from version 6.0 are available on the mirrors in the updates directory. Perhaps you were referring to the just issued policy of only creating updates for a year (Actually, desktop updates for a year, core updates for 18 months). Once an updated RPM is created, it is left on the mirror indefinitely.

Well I installed 9.1 and have not been really pleased with it onmy laptop (1.2 ghz celeron, 256 mb RAM,). It is Sloooow. I can’t connect to my network, and the repartitinoing and installation fscked my win xp partition! I can’t boot back into XP, with out reinstalling a certain file. Hopefully it won’t require a full installation.
I am not trolling, just my experience – hopefully I will have better to say as I tinker around. I would also love some help!
Some examples of the slow performance: Mozilla just took 43 seconds from “click” to fully open!
daan: yup, it can. urpme does exactly that – urpme <package> removes that package and all that depend on it.
dingofish: well, NTFS resizing isn’t Mandrake’s software, so you’ll have to report that to the NTFS project. can’t do anything about the network problem without proper information. did you run drakconnect? what’s the problem exactly? the slowness is very odd, there’s certainly something wrong – Mozilla takes less than 30 secs to open on this antiquated laptop. Maybe your hard disk isn’t in DMA mode? check with hdparm: install it (that’s a job for urpmi! :>) then do:
# hdparm /dev/hda
assuming that’s your hard disk, and check that using_dma is set to 1 (on).
I can only suspect that the slowness is realted to the network I was plugging into – standalone and it flies! I had used hdparm and everything checked out good. Still haven’t worked on the XP corruption though, I guess I am in no hurry – I really like this release. I know everyone has strong opinions about both Red Hat and Mandrake, but the last two releases by these companies have really, really done alot to move Linux into more users hands.
BitTorrent http://bitconjurer.org/BitTorrent/ is a swarmcasting protocol which allows you to upload parts of the file from others as you are downloading it yourself thus spreading some of the load of popular downloads.

The windows client is easy to operate as a browser plugin but if you are on Linux you will have to have python installed (an example of the syntax to start is
python btdownloadheadless.py –url <url> –saveas <directory to save to>)
