E/OS LX NT v 0.2 is available, a graphical desktop for MS-DOS that can run Windows programs, Linux programs and DOS aplications. It´s based on Linux 2.0.30, Xfree 4.1.0, Wine, Dosemu, and Libc. The system is based on the UMSDOS file system and can only run under DOS as Desktop.
Any reason for such an old kernel? Wouldnt they be able to support more hardware with 2.2 or 2.4? BTW…someone should really offer to redo the english on that site, it makes babelfish look good.
I don’t know why they chose an older kernel, but I know that the older Linux kernels are a whole lot more simple and people have used them in commercial products because they don’t need all of the extras the 2.4 series offers.
great, win 95 all over again
I love it… this is just insane.
Why not just install Windows9X or Linux??? Not that I think it is bad to attempt to show that something like this can be done, but seriously, why not work on something NEW and interesting rather than re-invent something that is ancient as it is now anyways?
May be if they are trying to emulate old software, they want it to run on old hardware as well. Why not, not many ppl will run this kind of software on their new P4 3.0
E/OS LX NT…..what is next
E/OS LX SL NT XP 2005
if you are a programmer or you have some knowledge on linux, download it and take a look on how it works, it’s just a totally hilarious thing.
In any case, this project is not intended to be serious
(I doubt the author even knows C programming), but it’s a
really hilarious to look at, the way he hacked up everything to make it look like another OS.
Mr. Wad, tenes huevos para ser tan perseverante, es una lastima que no aproveches esa cualidad para hacer algo enserio.
What makes you think this is a fake? If it’s not what they say it is, what is it really?
Never mind an old kernel…DOS?!?!?! Hehehe… this is so insane. It’s hilarious!
The website sure SOUNDS serious. Wow. If it didn’t run off of DOS then maybe it wouldn’t be so funny… BUT DOS?!?! Oh it has to be a joke.
From the description I would guess that the underlying dos is just used to bootstrap the Linux os, and that then runs dos programs through dosemu. Is this correct ?
The site seems a legit, if a little light on information (in English anyway)
Mmm… Its Like LINDOWS, but dont requires partitioning, and use much less resources..
(nice)
It will be useful 4 my girlfriend… like red hat, but without partitioning, very useful.
Your girlfriend said she wants a Mac.
I don’t think you need to belittle the author of this work, I also don’t think it is appropriate to comment on the author’s grammer. The author has written this in English as a courtesy for his English speaking audience, this is not written in his native tongue.
The system looks like it boots to DOS and then loads a Linux kernel, he mentions the 2.4 kernel. Then he loads WIN32 and XFree86 libraries so that you can run various applications, mainly geared at MS compatability. The is basically a specialized Linux distribution with an emphasis on MS apps.
Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like a valid linux distro to me…
Linux Kernel 2.0.30 – still I am guessing he put a fair bit of work into it, even if he doesn’t know C.
He does say you should be able to run it on a 25 Mhz 486… So using a 2.0 kernel seems to be the right choice. I work with a lot of hardware from that era, and even the 2.2 kernels seem slow on the old systems. But 2.0 was always fast.
I think it’s a great idea if you ask me. But then I love old hardware and software… downloading it now to give it a try on my old 486.
And what’s wrong with DOS?? I still run my mail server on a 386 running DOS 6.22
Long live DOS and the 2.0 kernel!
A)Pentium 100 MHz with 4.3 GB hard drive and 32 MB of RAM : 40 $
B)FreeBSD 4.8 : 0 $
A + B = quality server (mail, ftp, http, whatever)
Brother, it’s time to move forward and let the dead (DOS) rest in peace.
Some people just don’t get it… DOS is the perfect platform for this type of stuff. Heck, even Novell still use it to bootstrap…
> Correct me if I am wrong, but it seems like a valid linux
> distro to me…
it’s hard to explain what the guy did, yet hilarious.
amongst some of the things, you can download a whole
2.0 kernel with no apparent modifications at all.. but zipped DIRECTLY out of an umsdos directory
(but keeping the 8.3 dos naming, so it’s like.. uh??) and containing a .bat that just does nothing (???), and a whole distro that includes “eosx drivers” that are like.. eh, sections of an XF86Config file that are cutpasted together(??) I assume yo configure your system running a program written in visual basic that puts those together. It’s a really smoked up thing, not to mention the earlier versions of EOSX, with the fake screenshots, the READMEs high on drugs, etc
I talked with the author (emanuel champagna) on mailing lists some years ago when he released some gpld code and changed all copyrights/ownerships to his name.. without changing a single line of code (reason why he got flammed by a bunch of people) and he kept saying all kinds of hilarious technobabblish comments that didnt mean anything only to look important I also talked with people that know him personally that told me he’s mentally insane.. (our software industry here in argentina is pretty small, so we know eachother pretty well/
And sorry for talking about you like that, Emanuel, I dont really care about whathever you do, but, but since I really like OSNEWS, I feel really bad when I see this kind of things posted. I understand your noble goals and admire your perseverance, but please try to do things more seriously before announcing it all over.
so we have:
-an outdated kernel
-supports outdated windows programs
-dos too
-it looks like crap
-and is probably a swiss cheese of security holes.
still, the concept has some merit to it.
I’m guessing it’s using 2.0 because booting from a umsdos partition doesn’t work with newer kernels. The concept sounds a lot like ZipSlack (a Slackware install you could unzip onto a FAT partition to try it without repartitioning) with some emulation for windows programs already set up.
Is this guy serious?
Love this (from the documentation):
To Install run INSTALL.EXE and follow the Installation Instructions.
Once the installation has finished (about 10 to 200 minutes)
Why didn’t they just have it self loading without dos?
Seems like a neat system for older pc. Another reason to not throw away old pc’s.
“Some people just don’t get it… DOS is the perfect platform for this type of stuff. Heck, even Novell still use it to bootstrap…”
Not to mention <whisper>Microsoft</whisper>.
Ummm… why is DOS perfect for this? One Linux is booted it no longer used DOS at all. I don’t see how DOS is better than LILO or GRUB.
The Windows NT series does not use DOS to bootstrap. Windows 9x actually RAN on does, and so used it for more than just bootstrapping.
I can see using Linux 2.0 for old hardware. But I can’t see the reason for using DOS too bootstrap. Maybe the author wants to be able to quickly switch back to real DOS in case of incompatability???
All I can say is that this system is weird. Might be usefull for those stuck in DOS land though. This way they could try it out without killing their existing environment.
does this system actually boot linux as the primary system? i saw a screenshot or page that states that this is based on ReactOS – http://www.reactos.com/ . Perhaps ReactOS is booted within Linux to provide NT/windoze emulation, or vise-versa. either way, this is insane!
Does this mean that I can run my old Win 3.1 programs without having Win 3.1 to run them on? I know it says 100% 3.1 compatible. If it can do that then i see the point. However useful it is, or isn’t, it just shows what CAN be done. Has anyone tried it?
