Microsoft has released a document titled: “Why Microsoft Windows XP Embedded and Not Embedded Linux?” The Linux crowd did not find it very objective so the embedded-related LinuxDevices web site is organizing a response to this document via talkbacks.
“There is no common <strong>integrated device electronics</strong> (IDE) for Linux. OS development is command-line driven and applications development requires a new set of tools for each device. Developers must either build their own tool-chain from piecing together Open Source tools or opt for a specific vendor’s costly toolset.”
Sounds like someone’s relying a little too much on their auto-completing editor 😉
(should be ‘integrated development environment’)
i must say, that line myelin pointed out is rather embarrassing.. hehehe While i personally would prefer XPE over Linux for what i do at the office, i must admit linux has many strong points, and this comparison is very marketroided (is that a word?). You’d think they’d have someone check over this stuff.
WTF, “Linux was never designed to address the needs of the embedded market”
Linux is free and open, do with it as you please. Why pay good money some something that ‘might’ work.
Sorry MS,
I’ve been writting embedded Z80 MC since 1980 for the motor tool industry. No XPE expected here. Linux doing some neat stuff here http://www.axis.com/products/camera_servers/index.htm
Why chosse windows when QNX has 10 years in the field.
Exactly, why choose this unproven solution which has inherent and well documented problems outside of the embeded market when there are already well established solutions in the market?
I’ve been writing code on my laptop for the last six months which will (if I can afford it) eventually be ported to an iPaq or Zaurus or some other linux-supporting device. Frankly, between the standard linux APIs and QPE I couldn’t dream of a more elegant and portable environment.
As far as I can tell, I wouldn’t have to change anything more than a few makefiles and it should just work (I am realistic, though
Anyway, why in god’s name would I want to ever write another line of win32?
