noone here cares…realy, who cares about Win2k3 Server?
It doesn’t scale as well as other solutions anyway!
Its operating system related news right ?
Think about what you just said too. The post is about Windows 2003 “small business edition”. How much do you think it really needs to scale in that enviroment ?
Another new version of SBS – the Windows Server system that is overly complicated for real small businesses to actually use properly. Here’s to remaining employed!!!
Well, there’s no real need to complain about “Oh no, another Microsoft product”, if the competitors truely believe that their product and their business is actually worthy of challenging Microsoft.
This product combines a lot of services (e.g. firewall, database server etc.). But the license restricts that all the applications must run on one computer.
Since the server provides internal and external services it clearly provides a false sende of ‘security’.
for I am too lazy to read about new Microsoft products. However, I would like to know the difference between win2k3 and win2k. Or this small business version, too. What enhancements did Microsoft make to NT, anything worth upgrading?
Yes it is a M$ product and of course it is SBS so there are some inherit issues with the product. The core OS – Windows 2003 is 2003 Standard Addition with some nice wizards and templates – nothing missing from OS.
On the good news they increased total # of CALS from 50 to 75 from my understanding. I am sure they have crippled Exchange and SQL as they always do limiting the size of the IS and SQL DBs and no external trust allowed. I never unsertood the whole file server/firewall on same PC gimmick!!
I have an RC release running and it was a bit buggy but well documented in the newsgroups and with fixes and promises in the release to be addressed. Nothing pisses me off more than a fresh install of any OS followed by erroneous errors in the event log!! Then stated to be “Normal behavior”
Sharepoint/Outlook/Exchange integrate nicely with meeting workspaces and document stores for meetings. I like MS Outlook and 2003 is very nice with easy access to shared calendars and permissions to calendar and folders.
As far as I can remember SBS is a long standing product and is not really fragmenting the present market MS product line anymore than Mandrake with their suite of Personal/Corp/ProSuite Editions.
Overall I give it a B- as a suite of server components, templates, and management/reporting tools. If someone needs more info I will write a bit more.

Why fuss? There’s Linux. There’s BSD. There’s UNIX.
To see microsoft fragmenting their product line. Next we’ll see advanced SoHo server 2003 (+extensions)

Eugenia.
When can we expect a review of that thing?
Isn’t it just a Windows Server 2003 with less features?
A comparative would be nice something like REDHAT 9 versus that thing for instance.
