AustralianIT has a review of the newly released Mac OS X Panther OS while eWEEK says that the Panther release provides integrated workbench for developers. On other Apple-related news, Musicmatch sent an e-mail to its customers letting them know that, despite the arrival of Apple Computer’s iTunes for Windows, customers can still use its jukebox program to connect to Apple’s iPod. However, the message warns them that if they install iTunes, Musicmatch’s connection to the iPod will be severed.
“Greatest OS Ever Invented”
Hhihi! that’s funny!
almost as funny as windows ME…..
I have been reading David Friths’ columns in ‘AustralianIT’ for many years. He is an unashamed Apple apologist and I can’t recall him ever writing anything even vaguely critical of Apple. He writes solely on Apple – in fact his weekly column is called ‘The Barrow’.
Goodness! It’s PC Mag!
http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,4149,1369024,00.asp
I’m sure the F-I-V-E S-T-A-R rating must have been a typo (they don’t even like Macs.
I don’t know who irritates me more; PC apologists, or Mac apologists.
BTW WinMe has got to be the BIGGEST JOKE OF AN OS IN COMPUTING HISTORY. M$ should give my girlfriend back her money.
That happens to be one miserable OS.
Well.. doesn’t make him look like the brightest of them all if he in fact only figured that one out after three years on the occasion of a bug-fix release… hello, this is not a *new* OS and btw, I don’t share his opinion…
Read the article before posting, please. ‘Greatest OS ever invented’ is a quote. He is quoting Steve Jobs, and you don’t expect Steve Jobs to say anything else, no? In fact, you don’t expect any CEO in the world to say ‘My product is not the best’ or ‘My product is better than …’.
And he has never wrote anything even vaguely critical of Apple? Well, he did it this time, and not so vaguely.
And those who thinks that ridiculing anyone who likes OS X, even for technical reasons, or calling Panther a ‘bug-fix release’ will make them in any way credible, you are dreaming.
Read ‘My product is not the best’ or ‘My product is worse than …’.
“Was that ME? (MISTAKE EDITION?)
Sorry couldn’t help myself… XP=eXtra Problems”
Yeah, and panthers are an endangered species.
Come up with some more intelligent humor, please.
To the microsoft apologist.
How dare you sir, say anything against any other operating system on earth, when you know full well WindowsME was the worst of the worst, and that’s hard to do.
Microsoft raped us with that one,
and started the Switch campaign, not just to OS X but to Linux.
Every owner of ME SHOULD GET A FREE COPY OF WindowsXP PRO.
yeah everyone in my web arts design class is talking about how great Panther is, I just need to get it.
that I read this comment section…it is like all the trolls and morons came out for this one.
hey fellas, Go out to the gym, get some sun, and get a chick. look at the guys on Joe Average!!! they get to snuggle with a hottie…that could be you!!!
Win98 was okay… I liked the ease of sharing folder (avec passwords etc.). I actually use one at home as a print server.
ME: I skipped this one… At my day job we had SO MANY PROBLEMS w/ME… most computers were reverted back to Win98…
Win2000: I have skipped this one but we have quite a few workstations (CAD/CAM and Office). It’s probably been the most stable.
WinXP: That’s what I actually use during my day gig… It’s fairly stable now but the initial period of use had so many problems… spontaneous rebooting, networking from hell and a whole bunch of inconsitant behavior.
working with XP convinced me to re-establish my Mac connection. I have retired my old PowerComputing 150 (w/G3 upgrade any Sys 8.6). That’s now used for recording music.
I went out and bought a Dual G4/867 and never looked back. The Win98 computer at home was being used less and less… So, in this past w/e I actually moved it to a corner of my home office AWAY from my work area.
I initially have been using Jaguar, but Panther just blows me away! It’s been stable and faster. When was there an upgrade to an OS that acrtually performed better than it’s previous incantation? Even my PowerBook G3/333 works better (and looks better, graphically).
In any case, I’m sorry if my little ‘un-intelligent humor’ comment offended anyone, but I still stand behind the “ME phrase – Mistake Edition. BTW Penguins are endangered as well… Waddle, Waddle.
P.S. I haven’t yet tried Linux so I really cannot comment. I know quite a few people who use it, but not Graphic Designers…
Jb
id have to say as far as OS is concerned , each to his own
theyre only computers.
on the i-tunes item i think what has been said in the e-mail is untrue but cannot confirm it
Here is a company about to go extinct, and deservedly so. I tried out that little monstrosity about five years ago, then looked at it one more time last month. In all that time is was still as buggy, slow, crashy and godawful ugly as always. Sorry guys, you had your chance. iTunes will destroy you.
I propose that anyone using the terms PC/MS apologists, Mac apologists, M$, or zealot get automatically moderated down. These terms do nothing except make people angery and start flame wars.
I’m guilty of calling some Linux supporters zealots at times, and I’m willing to make sure not to do that should such automatic moderating be implemented.
And to those initial posters bashing Apple, not everyone shares your view. I for one think Panther is a great os.
Why even use musicmatch when iTunes is such a better option. I have iTunes on the Dell and it works great. Better then musicmatch.
I have Panther installed (clean install) on a lowly iMac 400 MHrz (with 384MB memory), a 800MHrz Titanium (500MB memory) and my 865 MHrz (1.5Gig memory), and report absolutely no problem. Also all of these computers run a lot more briskly than before and it looks like I just got myself some new hardwares!!!! That is how good an upgrade Panther is, except if you happen to have those 800 FW hard drives which failed after the update!!!!!!!
Go down to your local Apple dealer. Give Panther a try on a dual-processor G5 with the 23″ Cinema display. Don’t tell me that this doesn’t leave you weak in the knees…
“Don’t tell me that this doesn’t leave you weak in the knees…”
Well, you’re completely right, I mean, sometimes when I have nothing else to do, I just go the the Apple website and drool, and then I bounce my head against my monitor, for being foolish as to spend so much money on my regular x86…
Oh, Apple dealers aren’t very common in the Netherlands… I haven’t seen one ever.
Let me help you out then. Find a dealer close to you here: http://www.macfreak.org/5-apple/5-dealers.html
Well, as far as “end-user” OSes are concerned, then, yes, I agree with Steve Jobs. Panther is, indeed, spectacular.

Just like when the PPC chip came out, we ran into TONS of Type 11 errors running system 7.5.x and when Apple finally started writing native code in Systems 8 +, each update made the machine faster and faster BUT it’s what should of come out in the first place.
I feel there’s a bit of the same in 10.x-10.3. It’s nice when they add features, but the speed / spinning ball shouldn’t be happening if all the code was optimized and written specifically for OS 10???
The actual retail price of Panther is $129, not $229.
No my dear. Not in Australia, not in australian dollars.
As you will no doubt deduce as you read this site, I prefer Macs.
Yeah, not a good comparison site
Just the same, I think this site is mostly objective.
no one is objective. Especially Dan.
I for one have been using them all quite extensively for some time. Everything from database development, hosting, streaming, graphics, video editing, 3D animation and CAD. I must say each has some qualities. But in large, without doubt, if you think Panther is a UNIX hack or not what it claims to be you are DEAD wrong and I encourage you to check it out on a descent machine. They have added features that are mind boggling and it’s speed is truely impressive. The best part is that it turned a few old Macs I had into powerhouses again. First time I can actually say that the OS added new life to some aging hardware. I’m very impressed and have to say that MACs are far more worth working in than any Windows OS even with kick ass hardware driving it.
Also, if you go check it out. Bring someone who knows how to show you what they can really do. Don’t step in a store and because you can’t figure anything out post everywhere that it is crap. I do alot of training for both platforms and I love to point out the different ways in which they work. By the way, the hardest thing for Windows users switching to Mac is getting use to simplifying steps. I watch them constantly fight the system because the want to drive 10 menus deep when it’s a simple as drag and drop.
Just offering another point of view. Thank God XP finally made certain media features more usable. I was having a hard time telling anyone to get a PC for photo, video or audio work. Now if that’s all they can afford I set them up with a windows system and XP. But if they have $700 or more than it’s a rare occassion that I can recommend a PC.
I am testing to see if this proxy server allows to post or not.
2 weeks after getting a fantastic new 1.25Ghz Powerbook and being in a sort of rapture I got sent 10.3 as a free upgrade and it’s like getting a new machine all over again ! Apart from the obvious points ( Expose’ is simply brilliant ) Panther is simply chock full of small but significant enhancements to what was already by far the most productive , elegant , stable , secure and easy to use OS I’ve ever laid hands on . It also makes the interface substantially more responsive , which was about the only real criticism i had of Jaguar . Pity I have to use X.P and 2000 at work , it makes them look rather shoddy and ill-conceived .
P..S good point about the baiting .
If you like XP or whatever then fine , do things the hard way if you want . 😉
Yeah, my friend has used xp PRO? for about threee months, in this time he loses her license, too much hardware upgrade, was they tell to him, he upgrade more than four times, and have to call M$ two times, and mail two times, he is now using a cracked copy, and have no did m$ upgrades (system), it’s that crap they call PRO? for who? now he is looking for gnome and os x.
