ZetaNews.com posted some interesting all-around BeOS/Zeta news today: Opera 3.64 for BeOS now available for $10 USD, BeOSmax.org are explaining why the newest version is further delayed, an article about installing BeOS inside Microsoft Virtual PC 2004 and a hack effort to make BeOS believe that the machine has less RAM than it actually has in order to not hit its 1 GB RAM limitation and crash. It might be wise to let these hackers know that limiting BeOS to 512 MB of RAM might be the best number (there are no apps that require more than 128 MB on BeOS/Zeta anyway), as there are cases where BeOS would crash even with 768 MB of system RAM if the graphics card installed is brand new and maps lots of memory. It is always a combination of graphics card mapping memory (it is not the # of MBs on the graphics board, but how much its BIOS maps to the PCI level) and system memory so it is not always easy to know where your BeOS could go up to. Using some very old PCI gfx cards people reportedly used BeOS with 1 GB of RAM without a problem while others had crashes with 640 MB of system RAM and newer gfx cards. It’s not really worth spending $10 on Opera for BeOS IMO. And it’s not like it’s going to make opera realize that it’s worth porting their recent version to BeOS either.
Opera 3.64 has a lot of issues that was never fixed, it’s very unstable and outdated.
Download Firebird instead, it’s slower but it’s a lot better and free.
I second that. The Opera port on BeOS is _really_ bad. It should have being given away for free (and even then I wouldn’t use it over Net+ or the half-ported Firebird).

i absolutely don’t share your position, guys – according to my experience opera 3.64 has always been the better browser under beos. firebird is a monster compared to opera, and opera, although not up-tp-date, is still better than net+. i think the browser is worth the 10 bucks opera is asking for it, and i *believe* if enough interest is shown in the product opera may reconsider ’bout their support. btw, in case you haven’t followed opera’s developments lately, they have been expanding their target platforms aggressively, and have generally been very active throughout (beos being a big exception here), so who knows..
I thought that the last BeOS version was 3.62, Where did the 3.64 come from?
Actually, I’ve just followed the BUY NOW link, and lo and behold, it really is the 3.62 version, with the 3.64 typo on the webpage. I guess web page admins haven’t mastered the art of cut-n-paste which we shonky developers are famous for.

Wow, BeOS now running over 1GB of RAM. Imagine a Beowulf cluster of these.
I think Opera 3.62 is worth 10 bux, it renders nicely some of the pages where Net+ craps out. And it’s much faster and more convenient than Bezilla.

No, it will be able to *run* with over a gig of ram, but only use a smaller section of it. Probably about 512MB
This is just sick. Everyone knows there was Opera 4 that was made in cooperation with Be back in Dano days. Where has it gone?? Why do they still try to feed us this dinosaur when there’s a newer version?? Even if it’s for BONE, it wouldn’t be too hard to make it work under NetServer, and after all, many people use BONE nowadays, so all in all, it WOULD seem more logical to make Opera 4 available, not 3.62. Damn this Opera.

What do you mean, that Printing and drag and drop doesnt work? What more do you nead? If Iam correct its probably ported to 70-90% and not ~50%
I tried the last build of the Mozilla port yesterday, with the latest patches. And its really up to speed with other ports. I would like to thank fyysik with team for this. Great work!!!
Eugenia I think drag n drop will be implemented this year, togheter with printing. Arent you amazed by the work from a such small team? Iam!
XUL is the theif for the knob in the slider, in Windows this is used by the native widgets, therefore its way faster in Windows. But just scrolling the page, is very fast in BeOS now.
I would like to second that once more with Opera, its not worth 10$. Go with Mozilla if you are using BeOS.

My browser needs are not fulfilled on Zeta or BeOS. If it stresses you that you can’t see the cursor while entering text into fields or you have to ctrl+p to paste something you copied with alt+c from somewhere else on my system, then maybe you should check out Opera.

There won’t be such thing as enough interest in 3.64 and I will tell you why. Actually, this is not only an opion but a proven fact: The older ones amongst us remember a time when there was a *real* BeOS community, the times when we had the legendary Benews.com, third party developers and believe it or not — there was even something you could call a user base. *Even at that time* there was not enough interest/support for Opera, so where do you see it coming from today where there is virtually no-one left with BeOS..?! You people really should do a reality check every other day…

There is no version 4 available, because it was developed by Be Inc. And the story …… ended there.

I like Opera, always have. I bought several of the x86 versions for Windows.
I’ve been using Opera on my BeOS Box for years.
Sending them $10.00 for a license seemed like a no-brainer, so I did it.
I’ll probably buy Zeta at some point, though I don’t really need it on my older AMD K6-2 500mhz box.
I bought GoBE Productive at the end of it’s life too.
Why not support people who write good alternate solutions?
Maybe they’ll update the BeOS Version. Who knows?
These folks certainly seem enthusiastic, but from the sound of the thread they are hopelessly looking for a needle in a haystack. Now if they had source code or at least some guiding hand (anon suggestions) I am sure they’d get it done.
It’s a very weird statement as Firebird hasn’t even released version 1.0 so even the original isn’t finished. We’ll try to keep up with Windows/Linux but it’s hard with so few people.

this is a good way to think. Purchasing equals power. If you really don’t like the politics of MS or just want a more competitive market or more alternatives, then support the vendors who try to bring you alternatives.
Just imagine what the world might be like if people actually demanded clothes or food that incorporated fair trade labor practices or responsible environmental practices.
Instead we all feed a rather immoral system and think we are without fault.
I think the progress we have seen on the mozilla/firebird port on beos in the last month is really great.

Yeah, and *tons* of us bought it initially too. Guess what? Opera never updated it. Never issued any bug fixes. They even bought the company that did the port to BeOS and progress on Opera for BeOS died the day they released it.

For some reasons that I don’t understand, only BeOS 5.00 (without any updates) runs on my old PC. My problem is that all somewhat current Mozilla (Firebird) builds I know require 5.01 or higher.
Currently I use Opera 3.6 and Net+, but today’s internet doesn’t like them a lot. Does anybody know if/where I can get Mozilla / Firebird builds that work under 5.00?
It’s called Wagner, and it works just fine under Net_server. I have a copy on a beia webpad and also as part of the dev kit. The problem is that Be developed it specifically for WebPads – the final product just does not lend itself to desktop use. Sad but true.
Opera is offered at a low cost to those who have a working version on their BeOS system. Lets leave it at that. Or would you rather that they didn’t have the chance to purchase the registration code?
Hernlabs like many others had a dream of BeOS being the solution to many things. It just never came to that, now did it?
At least the guys at Hernlabs have a job developing software, which is more than you can say about the people at Be, Inc, Gobe, etc.

I’ve gotten MANY years use out of Opera for BeOS and been remiss in paying for it. $10.00 is too good a deal to pass up.
And decent software priced in the $15.00 or less range, get’s registered forthwith! It’s a no-brainer.
Especially, if I’m using it.
And if Opera NEVER releases an update, I won’t feel cheated at all.
Mozilla needs the updated libnet.so in 5.01, so if you can’t install the whole package just extract the library and try it out. Use PackageBuilder to extract the file.
I must apologize to MS. I was sure that VPC2004 would not support BeOS. As the report claims it might just be one of those apps that I will have to purchase now.

To have a functional Opera you have to make some adjustment.
In Opera, klick on “Preferences/Cache…”
Under “Disk Cache, set disk cache to 0KB and shut of this:
*Cache documents
*Cache images
*Cache Other
Under “Check Modified” you have to check Opera allways find the
lates side and choise “Always” under all this setings.
Load down “Giftranslator” from http://www.bebits.com how will make you to see all gif pictures show up properly.
Whatever happend to the new version of Opera that was suppose to ship with BeIA ? Surely they didn’t just scrap all their code ?
I think that if the BeOS community does not support societies interested in the Be market, we are already dead… but for those Opera fools, i will never spend a buck !!!
And why BeOS would be the only system that have a non-free webbrowser ? OS X have Safari, Xp have IE6. Just wait and see for the Themis project and to me, last ports of bezilla and Firebird are pretty good.
So yes i have bought Zeta, i will soon buy Refraction but no, i will never spend an euro for a webbrowser ! Mostly when it is not up-to-date !
Be did that port, not Opera, so the source went with the sold IP I suppose.
As I said above, Wagner is around. If you have the BeIA dev kit, it’s included. As to if it will ever surface, nope. It’s designed for IA not Desktop use.
