No mention of the new Java… hmmm.
This is a release I am definitely going to try. 4.4 gave me a lot of weird problems for some reason.
Hello Eugenia and osnews crew
It is just amazing how much interesting (Free)BSD there is since you decided to emphasize on that topic this week! They even released a new version of FreeBSD to give you articles ๐ What about extending it to a BSD-month whith a different flavour every week?
“It is just amazing how much interesting (Free)BSD there is since you decided to emphasize on that topic this week!”
Yeah, anything is better than all the BeOS stuff. I like to hear about OSes that are actually still being developed
Looking down the news page I don’t see a single BeOS news article. In fact, counting the list real quick of posted articles, there have only been 7 news items relating to BeOS out of 100 this year. So, hmm … I don’t think Eugenia posts nothing but BeOS.
how about a week on the new amiga stuff!
LINUX!
Linux is always a hot topic, no doubt about that. Fact is that there is a huge amount of linux-only pages out there – why duplicate the effort?
From – http://www.freebsd.org/releases/4.5R/relnotes-i386.html#AEN677 :
“Due to delays in the certification process, native JDK support for FreeBSD will be released shortly after 4.5-RELEASE. An announcement will be made on the FreeBSD Web site, as well as the FreeBSD announcements mailing list <[email protected]>, when the distribution is available.”
For something this good I can wait a little longer.
orlando….
I just got my 4.3 box configured exactly as I want it.
>No mention of the new Java… hmmm.
There is (at http://www.freebsd.org)!
Java is delayed and will be released soon.
Heh….normaly, that is somthing you hear out of the fast moving Linux world :-p…….I think you need to speed up my friend.
Does anybody know if any optimizations have been done for the P4
processor in FreeBSD? I couldn’t find anything on the latest release notes.
Upgrading to 4.5 is painless if you read the handbook.
http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/makeworld…
In general mot things aren’t released with optimizations for a high end chip, that way the kernel can still boot on a 386. I would check the version number on the compiler they include and see if that compiler has P4 optimizations, if so you can rebuild the release from source with those optimizations flags enabled. Doing it for the whole release will be a pain, but the biggest place where you would notice a gain would be in the kernel, and you really should build that anyway.
Also if you are really concerned about performance you should be sure to build any heavily used daemons so they are optimized, Apache and any database program you like come to mind as places to rebuild first.
uhh.. 2,6 GB in 8:40 h … ๐ Now I ‘ll have a beer….
Anyone know if FreeBSD 4.5 lets you install XFRee86 4.x instead of 3.3.x during the initial sysinstall ? (vs. the former method of “install a non-XWindows config, then go back afterwards and install XFRee86 4.x by itself”)
/me has an ATI Radeon card, and thus needs XFRee86 4.x
comes with 4.10 i believe however you can grab packages for 4.2? from xfree.org. Installs without a problem
david, just tried to install freebsd, it still uses the xfree 1986
graphical setup tool, no options for a Radeon at all, this card is out
for more than a year… (that’s long time in gfxcard world)
BeOS (dano) picked it up automatically…
Can’t they get rid of X completely… (or at least rework the setup tool)
Anonymous:
Yeah, I know. Earlier versioins also “came with” 4.x, but you couldn’t choose it during sysinstall. You had to follow their more obtuse instructions on http://www.freebsd.org/doc/en_US.ISO8859-1/books/handbook/x-install… , which involves using sysinstall to build a non-X system, then putting XFRee86 4.x in “by hand” afterwards.

That’s what I was afraid of. I bet sysinstall still only offers XFree86 3.3.x (thus no Radeon) and requires the above mentioned method for using 4.x.
Thanks for the link David, it was easier to follow then the graphical interface if the older version.
Now I have a 1280×1024 black and white screen with a terminal window even got my usbmouse working…
next step … figuring out how to get a desktop on it ๐
