“Version 7.0 of the Symbian OS is here, with improved support for 3G networks, EMS, MMS, IPv6, MIDP Java as well as a slew of improvements related to security and certificates. The successor to version 6.1 of the Symbian OS, v7.0, has been launched at the GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, bringing with it features that the mobile industry needs and wants. The new version builds on v6.1 and includes new communications, messaging, networking and application development technologies to more easily implement 2.5G and 3G technologies in new phones.” Read more at the one place for PDA and cell phone news, InfoSync.
While Microsoft are talking about it Symbian are doing it – and have been for years. If you count the Nokia 9210 (a Symbian based phone/organiser) in PDA sales it takes something like 50% of the European market – knocking even Palm into a distant 2nd.
The Biggest Phone makers ALL back Symbian, not one back Microsoft, one tried and gave up!
Phones sell in very big numbers, give it a couple of years and it’s quite possible that Symbian could quite possibly overtake MS as the biggest OS on the planet.
I’d guess we wont see 7.0 devices for another 6 months to a year yet though.
As for the title – Symbian started life as the OS in Psion PDAs.
and start making Psions again…
I’d love a Revo with a fast proc (200Mhz+) and loads of RAM (64+)….
Ah ! That great Epoch/Symbian OS. I used to be a very happy Psion owner. One of the most stable OS I’ve worked on, despite the fact I made a *lot* of (crashing) applications for fun, but the OS never died … 🙂
Isn’t Symbian the name of a high-end sex toy for women? Choosing that name for an OS is almost as bad as naming your IA the “eVilla”…
<p>
(ps. don’t ask how I know that ;^))
