Does anyone have screen shots of new features for 4.0? It’s a nice announcement, but seems a little slim on what’s so great about 4.0 (well, besides the G5 support.)
OS X is only allowed, according to the EULA to run on apple hardware. Besides that, apple hardware implements just as many standards as x86 including pci, ide, sata, and more. It also uses openfirmware instead of proprietary BIOS implementations.
Yellow Dog Linux is officially allowed by Apple. That’s what TerraSoft is an official reseller of Apple Computers. Apple knows full well that the systems being sold by TerraSoft are running either YDL alone or YDL and OSX in a dual boot situation, yet they allow it and endorse it with the “official reseller” tag that they let TerraSoft use. Apple, in the end, is just like any other business. They want to make money and if TerraSoft selling Macs running linux makes apple more money, then apple is all for it.
There is a faq on YDL’s site for moving an existing YDL install to a firewire HD. Unfortunately, there is no way currently to install YDL directly to a firewire HD. The process is quite detailed and involving, but in the end, it just works!
Do a search of the mailing list archives, or the faq pages to find it.
“Yellow Dog Linux is officially allowed by Apple. That’s what TerraSoft is an official reseller of Apple Computers.”
Being an official reseller doesn’t mean you’re owned by Apple. They are partners, with a good relationship. Apple owning Terra Soft would mean Apple was selling IBM Blades.
I didn’t say they were owned by Apple. That “what” was supposed to be “why”, so it should say, “That’s WHY TerraSoft is an official reseller of Apple computers.”
I’d also be interested in seeing a review of how YDL 4.0 compares (performance, tools, look, ease of use) to other RPM based distributions such as SuSE Linux, Red Hat Linux and Mandrake Linux. Even seeing a comparison of YDL 4.0 vs OSX would be worth while reading. Oh and if anyone can point me to a link with screen shots of 4.0 in action please post in this thread.
Very nice. I have followed YDL since version 2.0, I am impressed by the number of positive changes in the OS. It sure is looking good. ^_^
From the Yellow Dog Support Staff:
Marcus,
We released RC2 this week, and plan to send a master CD set to have CDs
made at the end of next week. At this point, ISOs will be available
through ydl.net. It will take 2 weeks to get our CDs in, and then we
will sell them through store for 2 more weeks. Finally, about 5 weeks
from now, we will release the ISOs on public mirrors.
Hope that’s not too confusing!

Take a look at some fedora core 2 screenshots – i’d imagine that’s what it looks like.
How is it that linux can be istalled on ppc based computer? I believed ppc based only could run their propietary software.
ON EVERYTHING! (literally…well almost at least) That’s how it can be installed on a Mac.
“How is it that linux can be istalled on ppc based computer? I believed ppc based only could run their propietary software.”
Short answer: PPC can run anything compiled for it.

A PPC processor is just like any other processor. It can run anything made for it. That would be like saying x86 processors can only run windows. {:o)

in other words, ppc hardware runs linux/bsd fine.

Omnivector a quick jump to the YDL website would reveal a few facts to you
1. Yellow Dog Linux is an Apple Value Added Reseller.
2. Yellow Dog Linux is an IBM Business Partner
3. Yellow Dog Linux sells Apple hardware (laptops and desktops) with YDL Linux pre-installed.
4. YDL-sold Apple computers maintain full Apple warranty.
5. Installing linux on your apple hardware, even that bought at stores other than YDL, does not void your apple warranty.
Also don’t forget about mandrake and there are even knoppix live cd’s for ppc that run great on mac.
The navy uses xserves running linux in their subs.
google slashdot for that story.

Does anyone know if there is a version of Linux that can boot from an external firewire drive. Last time I checked YD can’t

And as always, happy hacking
Im waiting for YDL to release live cds. I had 3.0 on my computer for a while, but I want a live cd to play around with linux.

YDL runs on the Pegasos too. The Pegasos is a PowerPC based CHRP mainboard with G4 CPU card. Beyond the link above there is this too:

…and this was announced last week:

But, not sure if YDL is included here.
YDL Peg and happy with it!

Thanks for the tip. I’ll check it out.
