Most likely not – unless they got drivers from BroadCom which they included as a binary only kernelmodule.
Airport Extreme doesn’t work under Linux because BroadCom refuses (or is made to by Apple?) to publish specs for this hardware so one can’t blame “Linux” for it imho.
I had Gentoo installed on my PB 12” Rev A a while ago but eventually had to go back to OS X because of sleep support and whole bunch of other hardware integration issues that imho prevent a laptop from being… well portable. If YDL 4.0 improves in this area I’ll definitely give it a go.
I doubt it will support Airport Extreme due to Broadcom’s stance on Linux and refusal to publish specifications, and for that matter sleep support is also tied into nvidia’s inexplicable (given their excellent support for linux in general) aversion to PPC, but there’s always hope… I’ve looked for a hardware compatibility list for the new release but can’t find one.
I can’t help but feeling that linux for PPC has stagnated a bit due to minor (but important) features like these.
I’m sure the situation is slightly better on desktop models and if I could go back I’d probably go for a Radeon based iBook instead, but oh well…
I love OS X, I think it’s one sleek OS indeed, but I really don’t like the choice being given between either going with it or having a stunted PB because I choose to do things my way.
How can someone expect Linux to live on if no GOOD drivers are done from each hardware compagny?
I’m starting to understand why HP wants to be so close to Linus, mabe they understand that it’s the only way they have to build good drivers for their servers….
No wonder why Windows will be with us for many years to come, it’s not because it’s better, it’s just the facto-standard for every hardware support. As for PPC, Apple will not push for Linux support i’m sure about that!!!
i hope yellow dog officialy suporst the pegasos like it does the mac’s that would be really nice especialy seince IBM and Freescale are so interested in the survival and promotion of the peg…..
Don’t worry the word is Freescale is paying the YDL folks to keep the Pegasos port up to date. We use the Pegasos as an Apache webserver with MySQL on Debian, but when YDL 4.0 gets released for the Pegasos we will give it a try. Also, more stuff here:
Well, even if they release it by the 3rd or 4th week of September, there’s going to be some time before a public download will be available (according to the mail from the folks at Terra Soft that was published here: http://osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=8035 )

I hope YDL has got Mac On Linux working, anyhow YDL 4.0 is going to be a step forward for most of the G5 owners.
So, does the AirPort Extreme work now?
“Yellow Dog Linux v4.0 RC3 is now available with support for all G5 Power Macs, MOL, auto-partitioning, and auto-yaboot configuration.”
Sounds good!

The same broadcom chipset that is quite prevalent in the x86 world doesn’t have drivers either. I doubt it’s because Apple is pressuring Broadcom.

I have seen other PPC hardvare too. Called Pegasos…
… or AmigaOne.
(BTW it’s hardware. I don’t mean to offend, but i think corrections should be allowed)

thanks for the info peguser
If I have a Mac, why should I install Linux on it? Isn’t MacOS is far more better than Linux?

Depends on what you are doing.
I don’t see any downloads for the YDL 4 ISO. Can anyone provide a link??
– Andrew
You can’t download a copy unless you’re a subscriber. Once it’s released to the public in final form, you will be able to download it.
Any ideas on when YDL 4.0 final is going to be released for download, was supposed to be released by the 3-4th week of September.

For one there are tons of apps for linux that are not on OSX (Like a current version of Open Office)
Lower cost (Everytime a new version of OSX comes out then you are hit for $129)
Faster (For sure on older machines like G3’s)
