In Amiga’s latest executive update, Amiga Inc’s CEO concentrates on the development of the AmigaOS4 desktop operating system. Initially the new PPC based AmigaOS is being targeted at Eyetech’s new AmigaOne ATX motherboard (an A1200/PCI bridge will become available later on, which will allow AGA chipset compatibility, but this is not needed if you don`t want it), bplan’s new multi-processor supporting PEGASOS microATX motherboard, Elbox’ new G3/G4 Accelerator cards and even old Cyberstorm/Blizzard PPC accelerators for classic Amigas. Merlancia Industries, with legend Amiga hardware designer Dave Haynie as their CTO are even developing new PPC laptops. New PPC native versions of popular Amiga software including MUI and IBrowse are under development, as announced in this executive update.
Yes and it’ll conquere the world, yeaaaaahaaaaa !!!!
Oh, BTW, I’m the first here…
Not related to amiga, but related to PPC. Does Darwin run on these non-Apple PPC platforms? If so, it could mean good things for using OS X in clusters. The only part of OS X not in Darwin is Aqua, which isn’t necessary on any of the nodes. That would mean an OS X cluster could be made for a lot less money. If the Pegasos price list is correct, it looks like a per node cost less than $700 is attainable!
Well they’ve finally gone ppc all the way. People have only been talking about this ever since Commodore went bust. I can’t help but wonder what all of this has still got to do with “Amiga”, it was more than simply an OS you know.
It’s a little hard to understand what Amiga is up to. They seem to be spread all over the place with all different kinds of hardware, with all different kinds of vendors working on different parts, etc. Their plans are so grandiose, it all looks like somebody’s throwing a lot of money into a pipe dream. I’m not against what they’re doing, I think it’s really cool, but I think they have little chance of success in today’s computing world. I hope I’m wrong, however.
Just think for a second…
1. The Amiga1/2/3 will run AmigaOS4 and 5
2. It runs LinuxPPC, maybe even NewAtheos/BeOS
3. It might be able to run MacOSX
4. It might be able to run OBOS.
This box is definately interesting for a ‘geeks’ geek.
I’ve been waiting a long time for PEGASOS. This is great.
From my understanding if all the core components of darwin are ported (Which are opensource). Then aqua should run fine on top of any ppc system. So like…. Who wants to spot me the cash to buy one of these so I can find out 😀
The developers at bplan (producer of Pegasos) didn’t wanted to answer this question because it would be illegal to run MacOS-X on a non-Apple hardware. But he told us that a patch for Darwin (HAL of OS-X) will not be so difficult an perhaps availible together with the release of Pegasos-Board – and he had a very bright smile on his face … 🙂
The PPC architecture has always been lauded as having a much more efficient instruction set than x86, thus the smaller die sizes for similar speed CPUs … and the consequent ability of Apple to come up with the quiet, fanless, late and lamented, Cube. Now it looks like we will be able to buy a workable PPC box without paying the Apple hardware premium.

BeOS does not run on G3/G4 hardware, and IIRC, OBOS has not been ported to the PPC platform yet…

yes, but will it run osx? i’m a tad confused on that point…
BeOS does not run on a G3 becuase Apple wouldl not release the required information about the G3/4 mobos CHIPSET. So the hang up was not on the G3/4 CPU, but the mainboard.
It is *possible* that if eyetech/amiga releases enough specs, somebody could hack a patch or installer of sorts to run BeOS on an Amiga . . .possible but unlikely, anyways.

Generally speaking, the Amiga community wants to see as many alternative operating systems running on all our new and classic Amiga hardware as possible.
Although, the Amiga community will try to offer the best desktop/server solution with AmigaOS. Competition in my opinion is good as different OSes have different advantages due to different priorities. Eventually I hope the AmigaDE can be a common breeding ground for all alternative operating systems to benefit from its advancement.
However MacOS X is a different story, for as long as AmigaOS can`t be run on Apple hardware that is. Until then I personally wouldn`t like to see it running on (without some cost/effort) on Amiga hardware. IMO Apple is sometimes even worse as compared to Microsoft with regard to their anti-competitive behaviour, if Apple were in the same position as Microsoft is in today, I believe the computing industry wouldn`t be much of an improvement in terms of innovation and 3rd party oppertunies.
I’m not really interested in dozens of operating systems running on the AmigaOne/PPC. I’m more interested in running AmigaOS on the PC – on mainstream hardware, which opens up AmigaOS to millions of new potential customers.
With this custom-hardware, people have to buy new hardare just to run AmigaOS. How many people are going to do that?
> I’m more interested in running AmigaOS on the PC – on mainstream hardware, which opens up AmigaOS to millions of new potential customers.
This is what the AmigaDE is intended for. It will run without problems on top of Windows. Having a superior AmigaOS solution available for x86, will not be successful, just look at BeOS or OS/2. This is partly due to the anti-competitive behaviour and the monopoly (abuse) of Microsoft and the fact that most (non-geek) users wouldn`t want to be bothered with installing an unfamiliar (yet superior) Operating System. The PPC platform is a much cleaner solution, as AmigaOS is currently being targetted mainly at AmigaOS users and other “computing geeks”, such people are more likely to invest some more money in a cleaner solution.
Sadly general consumers are heavily mis-informed. Sometimes such people spend alot of cash on only slightly faster hardware. Buying incredible bottle-necking solutions with no noticable general performance increase, but just a higher Mhz number on their machine. It is incredible hard to make such people understand that for instance a 25 mhz 68040 is alot faster than a 50 mhz 68030 solution. This all is due to incredible mis-informative marketing methods. Similarly PPC processors offer much better performance as compared to x86 processors at the same clockspeed. If you don`t see much difference in performance on Apple hardware this is mainly due to MacOS/MacOS X being so incredibly bloated and unoptimised.
AROS =(AmIga OS)will run on x86 processors.
AROS is an open source AmigaOS clone research project, which started at a time when little was happening with regard to AmigaOS development. Luckily AmigaOS development isn`t dependent anymore on PC manufacturers like Commodore, Escom nor Gateway.
For a much better AmigaOS experience on general x86 PC hardware, I advise to check out the http://www.osnews.com/story.php?news_id=604“>AmigaOS emulation solution as well.
The only custom thing is the PPC & the mobo. Then it uses PCI, USB, IDE ATA 100 etc. as usual, so I wouldn’t talk about “non-mainstream hardware”.

The AmigaXL package contains two different emulators – XL is UAE on
QNX, Amithlon uses a minimal Linux kernel to run the emulation.
Amithlon is the more successful of the two, and you can build a PC
using a suitable selection of hardware (drivers are limited so far)
which acts as a very fast Amiga, with no other OS in sight.
Although Amithlon emulates the 68k, in practice it is simply Amiga
running on an Athlon (or Pentium). The faster the CPU, the better.

Why? This is mainly mis-informant FUD? Why would someone want to read your and your comrades heavily biased comments? Dammy you are an open source advocate, you have often made it clear that in your view, anything not open source is not much good. Please do something more useful and concentrate of advancing AROS to more useful levels, instead of trying to slow down other projects. How about writing an article about why i.e. AROS is the best possible solution for Amigans instead of trying to convince people that other solutions are no good?
“I’m not really interested in dozens of operating systems running on the AmigaOne/PPC. I’m more interested in running AmigaOS on the PC – on mainstream hardware, which opens up AmigaOS to millions of new potential customers.”
A closer look at the specifications of the AmigaOne G3 SE would perhaps be in order:
1) 2x AGP Slot
2) 4 x PCI slots
3) 2x USB + 2 headers
4) On board 10/100 Broadband ethernet
5) future revisions possibly sporting a socketed CPU and, hence, faster processors (over the 1GHz barrier)
So, you see that the AmigaOS will be running apps which will be hitting mainstream hardware. The x86 implementation of 0s3.9, Amithlon/AmigaOSXL, is only an emulator.
If developers write software which is detached from Windows dependancy, there is absolutely no reason not to expect a plethora of qualiy software in the coming months.
“With this custom-hardware, people have to buy new hardare just to run AmigaOS. How many people are going to do that?”
Like I explained, it is not a particularly “custom” piece of hardware: and if pre-orders are to be believed, you may just be surprised to see just how many people actually do part with their cash.
Cheers and beers,

Hmm… there have been some confusion around this. But I THINK
this should really be ONE AGP slot with 2X speed…

I don’t want to run something that is called “Amiga” on a PC. I want to run an AmigaOS-like operating system on the PC.

BeOS’s userbase grew massively when it was launched on the x86, and when OS/2 was around Windows 95 hadn’t even been released and Microsoft bearly had a monopoly.

How is it “cleaner”? And aren’t these “geeks” already likely to own PC hardware? Are they going to have to throw it away just to run AmigaOS 4 which has no modern applications. Who is going to do that?

the problem with running amigaos on x86 would be that everyone would keep on using windows. Sure, someone might install amigaos like they have installed beos and qnx just to give it a shoot, but they would probably use windows most of the time because they are used to it. AmigaOS is ‘cleaner’ because its nowhere near as bloated as ‘mainstream’ OS’s.
Many ‘Geeks’ have systems other than JUST PC hardware.
Why are you certain AmigaOS4.0 will have no modern applications?
Who is going to use AmigaOS?
