OpenBSD project leader Theo de Raadt today announced the official release of OpenBSD 3.6 for fourteen architectures. This regular release includes new support for the luna88k platform as well as a long list of enhancements such as SMP support for x86 and AMD64. NewsForge has details and a list of mirrors. There is also an interview with openbsd developers on new technologies in 3.6.
Do they even have Gnome yet?
good work, OpenBSD Team!!!
>Do they even have Gnome yet?
Why do you need gnome to run a firewall or web server?
There’s
http://www.benzedrine.cx/OpenBSD_36_i386.torrent
for the i386 directory of the FTP mirrors (149 MB, matching
ftp://ftp.openbsd.org/pub/OpenBSD/3.6/i386/MD5
).
there never was a Gnome 1.x port for OpenBSD because nobody could get it to run. Even after it was put in the tree it didn’t really work for a time. Apparently they do support it now (although i’ve long sinced moved to FreeBSD/Gentoo)

Who said anything about a firewall or web server?
They should arrive shortly (if they haven’t already).
Despite what others are saying, it works wonderfully for my desktop. Can’t think of a single issue that switching to another BSD would solve.
Of course he did, I just installed 2.5 this morning If I had known this I would have installed it weeks ago…
Im not sure what all the fuss is about gnome. Gnome is clearly included in the ports/packages.
I guess that should be 3.5 not 2.5, getting tired.
OpenBSD works great as a desktop. I’ve used it as firewall, web, file, FTP, DNS, DHCP server and development platform for years. I just upgraded from 3.5 to 3.6 in a half hour.
I avoid KDE/Gnome because they are too big, complex and resource heavy.
OpenBSD performed very well on every system I ever installed it on: 486 dx2/66, 486 dx4/100, Pentium 120, K6-2 500, PII-350, PIII-800, Celeron-800, and now it’s just magnificient on my 2600+ XP.
It’s also extremely easy to manage. Configuration is a breeze, documentation is excellent – it’s so helpful that you learn from it.
Of course. It was allready in (3.5).KDE (3.2) also.
You can perfectly well use OpenBSD as a secure desktop.
Heh, and they said they’d release it Nov 1. Sneaky, but I’m happy
so far everything is ok.. woot good job guys..
Dave, could you (or anybody else) show (or sent me to mail) the screenshot of your desktop? I am thinking about trying OpenBSD as a desktop OS and development platform and it is very interesting for me how the secure and lightweight desktop looks.
PS. Is there any online OpenBSD package database?
if you don’t use a wallpaper with a cute blowfish und OpenBSD in big letters the look of your “secure and lightweight desktop” will be the same as on every other unix like system and depends mainly on your windowmanager. Have a look at http://www.fluxbox.org/screenshots.php and just imagine it’s OpenBSD. Or look for screenshots with windowmaker, fvwm2, …
online package database is for example here:
ftp://ftp.kd85.com/pub/OpenBSD/3.6/packages/i386/
Is there any online OpenBSD package database?
Yes:http://www.openbsd.org/3.6_packages/
