Red Hat Announces New Corporate Desktop OS

"In a sign that demand is growing for alternatives to Microsoft Corp.'s Windows software, Red Hat Inc. will release a version of the Linux operating system and other programs tailored for desktop computers in corporations, universities and government agencies." The AP story is here, Red Hat's site here. It is available for purchase only in bulk volumes or as part of an RHEL "pack". Also, Red Hat's road map leads to SE Linux.

SkyOS 5.0-beta5 Quick Review

There is a new review of SkyOS 5.0, complete with a number of screenshots. The review can be found at the new Sky System website. In other SkyOS news, the ISS (Integrated Sound System) is progressing quickly, and Robert has completed and implemented drivers for both the Ensoniq/Creative ES1371 sound cards and VIA vt82xx / AC'97 chipset.

ISS (Integrated sound system) has been implemented into SkyOS. The ISS is a very well integrated sound system which makes it very easy to access the audio multimedia services of SkyOS, though providing a very powerful interface.

Windows Programs on Linux?

Project David is the codename for a new middleware program that sits on top of Linux to enable it to run Windows based applications seemelessly. Flexbeta has more. Editor's Note: With no proof and no source code, there's little reason to regard this as more than a hoax. However, if it's true, it would be a huge development.

Windows XP SP2 RC2 in May

CRN is reporting that May will be the release date of the second release candidate of Windows XP SP2. Microsoft executives speak of integrating more features into the new service pack, including a spyware tool. More detials here.

Linspire Introduces New Linux Applications

On Monday, Michael Robertson of Linspire (née Lindows) preannounced two new applications, Lsongs (screenshot) and Lphoto (screenshot). Although details are scant, the applications appear to fill a gap in the Linux world currently being filled by iTunes, WinAmp, RealPlayer, iPhoto, and other apps on other platforms.
