This is a filler show dedicated to discussing OSnews itself. We discuss the dreaded moderation system, user participation (that’s you, you wonderful people!), what goes on behind the scenes and plans for the future of the site.

My hypothesis is that no OSNews reader uses that bloated DRM-invested piece of nagware/spyware/crapware.(I guess I kind of feel strongly about it)
That should explain the non-existent feedback.
That said, it’s still the best podcasting client.
Much agreed.

Image if you would, that iTunes is just a vehicle. Bring with it rich content that you can harvest tone of content to little or no price to multiple apple-approved playback platforms: Windows iTunes, Mac OS iTunes and Apple mobile devices. iTunes is a tool for enabling users to have said content and enabling the user to see or hear anything on what ever device that apple has blessed for them to use.
Sure I hate DRM, but unfortunately its not like you can boycott the shit. You want to own a stylish iPod or iPhone, sorry jack you have to use iTunes to xfer the content; but hey its not that bad we give you the ability to get free shit, and rip your own cds!
Is that so bad? well I for one agree that iTunes used to suck, like back in the day when it was just for the iPod and Mac. Not so much anymore, iTunes like I explained is a pretty function delivery mechanism for free (as in price) content as well as your own CD rips. While it fails as a player, it makes up in its ability to deliver content to multiple devices.
Winamp on the other hand… I wont even talk about that…

I use iTunes. It’s the best there is.
My hypothesis is that you’ve primarily used the Windows versions of iTunes, would that hypothesis be correct?
I would really love OSnews to feature less but longer articles. This isn’t the only news website I visit. A few in depth reviews are a lot better than a few short ones.
I loved the series of articles about GUI elements by Thom. More like that please. And less about software updates.
We certainly don’t disagree! It’s going to be difficult getting there though. We need more editors and contributors as well as all new tools for writing. It’s within our plans, but how soon that happens really boils down to contributors lightening Thom’s load
I found it funny that Thom does not like to say the word Synnergy… Joking aside, I think people would be willing to submit news items more often if they were given a reason why their submissions are rejected. If I know why an item is being rejected I would look out for that detail next time I find something interesting to post instead of shooting in the dark. This would be synnergistic 😛
OSnews is one of the few news sites I’ve been following lately. It’s half because I like the opinions and comments, and half because of the news selection of yours. I don’t even know what set of other sites I could be following instead of you!… Outside of OSnews I’ve been only following engadget for hardware news, and the cnet daily news for that “serious”/PR echoing/infotainment kind of thing. I also hear the Nature Podcast, FLOSS Weekly and the 2600 shows.
I also gave up on Slashdot, Digg and others some time ago. I tried BBC for “real world” news, but there was too much BS mixed in.
So, keep up the good work.
PS: I hadn’t hear to the end when I posted this. :]
I think it is very important that authors participate on the comments section, even if it’s just to signal to the readers that their comments are not just going to /dev/null. But that doesn’t mean you must really read everything carefullt and reply everyone, or get burned on flame wars…
BTW, I’m sorry for my previous comment on the X article. It got scored with “-1”, and I didn’t like that!…
It will be great when OSnews get a more sophisticated review system… I suggest a multidimensional classification system that has a “bluntness” field so we don’t discard otherwise good comments just because they are not very friendly! :]

Regarding the Page 1/Page 2 issue. I don’t use RSS and visit OSnews a few times a day and have done I arrived here as a BeNews refugee about 10 years ago. Partly to see the new articles, but also to read any new comments posted on the more interesting articles.
I would love to be able to have a direct link to the “All News” tab which I can bookmark and visit by default as I commonly forget or miss page 2 articles until I visit via Opera Mobile. Any chance this can be implemented?
even if i get my password wrong it says “login successful!” although it doesn’t log me in.
Guys, is there any way to sort out the levels? Beyond a joke this week!! I had to manually ramp up Thom and ramp down Tess (who has a very annoying nervous giggle by the way..) Whoever edits this would do well to organise for all the streams to be recorded in their own locations and then combine in post production. Do a little proofing through head phones and speakers (as the dynamic range can vary greatly) and then normalise the levels to remove any spikes. Thom is inaudible at some points – which some might argue is actually a good thing, but really screws with the enjoyment of the otherwise good/interesting material you cover.
[edit] removed the extra “record” that made the “whoever…” sentence make no sense…
