Interview: AmigaOS 4 lead developer Steven Solie

Good interview with Steven Solie - this bit stood out to me: "Although Hyperion has been using serial numbers for copies of AmigaOS since 4.0, it won't reveal sales numbers. Solie's 'personal guess' is that the system has 2000-5000 users. 'If you include all the various Amiga clones and emulators we would probably be talking about around 10000 users total,' he adds, 'it is really difficult to judge because a majority of the users are rather quiet.'" Fascinating number - lower than I anticipated.

Icaros 1.4, AspireOS 1.7 released

Sure, we have AmigaOS and MorphOS, but those cost money and require special hardware. For those of us more interested in running an Amiga-like operating system on regular, x86 hardware, there's AROS. Two AROS distributions, Icaros Desktop and AspireOS both saw new releases recently.

Timberwolf beta released for AmigaOS

This technology is more than just a browser, it is an enabling technology, bringing powerful tools such as html5, WebM, JavaScript, XUL, and more to AmigaOS 4.x. These are the building blocks for other applications as well, such as the email client 'Thunderbird' or the media center 'Songbird'. This first beta release includes almost the full functionality of the browser, allowing style-sheet enabled web browsing, secure connections, use of Firefox add-on and more."

AmiKit 1.6.0 Released

AmiKit 1.6.0 is available for free download. It's a compilation of more than 300 Amiga programs that turns your Windows, Mac or Linux computer into an Amiga environment. This new version includes full and registered version of Directory Opus Magellan II, as well as a new emulation engine, full video replaying support, etc. For AmiKit to work, you do need Amiga ROMs and the AmigaOS, which can be obtained via AmigaForever, for instance.

Interview: Pavel Fedin, AROS Developer

Obligement has an interview with Pavel Fedin (the original French version is also available), a key AROS developer. "Current pace of AROS' development can be perceived on www.ohloh.net/p/aros. Though as can be seen here, the Russian developer Pavel 'Sonic' Fedin is alone responsible for more than 3400 commits in eleven years, while the other four most important AROS contributors are inactive or almost since five years (apart of Georg Steger who was still active one year ago)... One can then see how much Pavel is important in current AROS evolution." Note that the English version is a translation by a non-native speaker.

Big news from the Amiga world this weekend. That stubborn bunch are holding AmiWest 2011 this weekend, and it's been one heck of an eventful little, uh, event. Not only will the AmigaOne X1000 start shipping by year's end, Hyperion also announced something many in the Amiga world have been waiting for for a long time: an Amiga laptop. Update: Steven Solie, AmigaOS' team lead, also held a presentation about the past, present, and future of AmigaOS. The team is working on some pretty interesting stuff - protected address space, multicore support, USB3, new printing subsystem, and much more.

Icaros Desktop 1.3.2 Released

Version 1.3.2 of the Icaros Desktop is now available. Icaros Desktop is one of the prime AROS distributions, ready to be used on your desktop today - no fancy PowerPC hardware required (like with AmigaOS or MorphOS). If I can get this running, it might be about time we took a closer look at this, don't you think? Thoughts?

AmigaOS 4.1 Update 3 Released

AmigaOS 4.1 has seen another update; we've hit update 3 already. This one's got all sorts of fixes and updates, including updated PATA and SATA drivers, updated Intuition and GUI components, updated USB stack with USB 2.0 (EHCI) support, updated and improved Warp3D support, faster 2D graphics support, various kernel fixes for increased stability, and lots more.

Icaros Desktop Reaches Version 1.3

A new "point release" of Icaros Desktop, distribution of the AROS Research Operating system (an effort to re-create the original AmigaOS in a open source fashion, that may be ported on any platform), has been released today. The new version includes new software and games, but also enhances and extends some of the goods already included in the former releases.

A few moments ago, a woman appeared at my doorstep with a package for me. Since it was about 19:30, I was a little perplexed - this isn't a very usual time to be delivering packages. Also, this was a woman who I've seen walking around town before - she's a local. She handed over the package, and when I saw the note on top, I was even more intrigued: "From Trevor Dickinson, A-EON Technology".

Always wanted to own the IP and trademarks of one of the most innovative computer brands in history? A brand carried by a computer which was easily ten years ahead of its time, capable of multitasking (in colour) with multiple resolutions displayed at the same time, while Windows were still windows and the Mac couldn't hold more than 8 pages in its word processor on its single-tasking monochrome operating system? Yes, Bill McEwen's Amiga, Inc. is selling the Amiga trademark and all associated IP. It's not like the guy was doing anything with it anyway.

The fabled Amiga X1000 has been spotted in the wild, in the homeliest of places--Station X, a.k.a Bletchley Park. "The AmigaOne X1000 is a custom dual core PowerPC board with plenty of modern ports and I/O interfaces. It runs AmigaOS 4, and is supported by Hyperion, a partner in the project. The most interesting bit, though, is the use of an 500Mhz XCore co-processor, which the X1000's hardware designer describes as a descendant of the transputer - once the great hope of British silicon." Firefox on Amiga: Timberwolf Goes Alpha

After much, much development, the developers behind AmigaOS 4 have released the first alpha of Timberwolf, the AmigaOS 4 port of the Firefox web browser. I tried it out on my Amiga, and indeed confirmed that this is very much alpha material.

AmigaOne X1000 Beta Test Team and Program

And as time goes by, the date the AmigaOne X1000 will be unveiled creeps ever closer. Last week, A-Eon has announced it will make 100 Nemo motherboards, rev-2, available to 100 beta testers under a special discount program. Several AmigaOS4 developers already have access to these motherboards for a while now, as they are working on implementing the necessary drivers.
