“Microsoft on Tuesday announced several new efforts to bring wireless capabilities to devices using its operating systems. Among them is its Phone Edition application, which will help handheld owners access data and make voice calls. The software runs on the Pocket PC 2002 operating system and will be used with Hewlett-Packard’s Jornada 928 Wireless Digital Assistant, which the PC maker is also expected to announce Tuesday. Microsoft also revealed plans to work with Intel as well as Texas Instruments to develop reference designs for phones that will run its Windows Powered Smartphone 2002 operating system. A reference design is basically a blueprint for a technical system that lets different manufacturers build essentially the same device. after the blue screen of death on PC the green screen of death on console will MS give the world the purple screen of death on cellphones?

Leading handset makers and most service providers are deeply suspicous of MS’ attempt to get into the market. the leading four or five handset vendors who dominate this market have snubbed MS by creating and supporting symbian. Nor has MS gained much support from radio and/or baseband chip vendors. TI is the exception, and TI mainly sells product to the same tier one phone makers who have snubbed MS in favor of symbian.
MS has virtually no design wins in the wireless space. Moreover, MS won’t cut it in this industry because margins are already very low and no one will relinquish control of their cost model to anyone. While i have not read the specs of their phone OS, i will also say that inefficient OS products carry a severe penalty in the mobile handset market because they compromise battery life and and/or size.
Green Screen of Death….
My Xbox Has Never crashed on me, and at my house it is used around 4 hours a day so I guess any day now it should crash on me ( the longest it ever ran was 22 hours when i tried to play the NFL Fever Dynasty straight through) i have seen a PS2 crash a couple of times it just sort of hung up.
I have never had my ipaq lock up on me so that doesn’t seem to be that unstable.
I’ve never been fortunate enough to NOT have a MS product crash on me.
Why must they poke there junk into every electronic aspect of my life?
I must admit, they do have really good graphic artists working on their interfaces (almost as good as Apple). I don’t care for Pocket PC because I think it’s a pain to use, it tries to be way to much (who wants to edit Word and Excel docs with a stylus? Not me!) and has a desktop PC interface in a postage stamp sized area. It is, however, pretty though.
OK, so they monopolize the desktop market, they are very possibly going to do the same with the handheld, tho i hope palm whips MS on that…MS takes the browser market, and are trying to take the server market, then they are do this .net stuff. and now they want to take the phone OS market…good God, soon my lawn mower will have a start button and an Windows splash screen
When I woke up this morning, I started with a M$ Coffee poured from my M$ coffee-machine, then, listening to my M$ radio, I put up my M$ suit and run into my M$ car (still listening to my M$ radio) etc.
