The MacWorld San Francisco keynotes may have been the stage for numerous Apple product announcements, but one can question whether or not it makes sense to use such a show to announce new products when you have a website in the top 10 of the world's most popular websites, and 250 stores that attract millions of visitors a week. In addition, IDG, the company behind the MacWorld events, has a troublesome relationship with Apple, ever since IDG moved the east coast MacWorld from New York to Boston, and Apple pulled out of that MacWorld - which led to the show's demise in 2005 due to lack of attendance.
Apple representative Steve Dowling declined to comment on any possible health issues, stating that "Phil is giving the keynote because this will be Apple's last year at the show." He added: "It doesn't make sense for us to make a major investment in a trade show we will no longer be attending."
This will mark the end of an era, as the keynote in January provided the stage for many important product announcements. Apple will most likely focus its attention on shows it produces on its own, such as its WorldWide Developers Conference in June, and the usual iPod events in fall.
