Xandros recently released version 2.5 of their Linux Desktop OS. This new release is available as 2 different options, the Deluxe Desktop and the Business Desktop. This review will focus on the Business Desktop release.

Why do so many people think that it’s just Konq renamed? It’s a different app! Look real close at the two and you’ll start to see it in the button toolbars and menu layouts. Sure it calls some of the same config dialogues, but that’s it. It really is an original app.
Xandros is a really nice distro…everyone interested in desktop linux should really try it.
Thats my understanding as well. After all, if they just modded Konq, they would have to make the source available, and I don’t believe they do.
Well, either way its a great product, even if more then a bit out-of-date for my taste. Once you go 2.6, you don’t go back.
This article makes Xandros sound great. While some of it being above me(desktop user), I would recomend it for a friend who is needs a office, and a photo editing alternative.
For me however, I would like to see the 2.6 kernel added, and I wonder what Xandro’s is compiled for. If its i386, it doesnt cut it for me.
Ever since I’ve used an i686 distro with a 2.6 kernel, I can’t go back.
However if I were using, lets say a pentum 2, or 3. Than this would suffice.
I also wouldn’t really want star office. Open Office is enough, and with Codeweavers, if I had a choice of my old MS OFfice or Star “”, I would use MS.
It seems like alot of these Debian versions always break apt. ie:Linspire….
Well I will try it out to see for myself, or wait until 2.6 makes it in.

XFM is NOT Konqueror!! This drives me nuts every time I see it! Xandros File Manager is not built off of or based on Konqueror. It was written from the ground up and is proprietary Xandros code. If you open the run commnad and type konqueror, konqueror will start up and look just like it does in every other distro. I wish reviewers would get there facts straight! 🙁

No, but KDE is so componentized that it is difficult to tell the difference.
I don’t know if XFM is exactly Konqueror, but it definately could be considered at least a “front-end” to konqueror. When you open a web page in both apps, it renders the exact same, the overall app looks and feels the same. Just about eveything between the two apps are very, very similar. Xandros File Manager even reports itself as Konqueror 3.1 to web servers.
In my experience if it acts like a chicken, looks like a chicken and smells like a chicken, it must be a chicken.
Konqueror the app, is actually split into two:
– one is libkonq (LGPL) – much of the backend code of konqueror
– the other is konqueror (GPL)
xfm is based on libkonq and khtml (LGPL), but not konqueror.
