Java "Oracle and IBM today announced that the companies will collaborate to allow developers and customers to build and innovate based on existing Java investments and the OpenJDK reference implementation. Specifically, the companies will collaborate in the OpenJDK community to develop the leading open source Java environment."

Sun had problems long before everything got opened up. One did not necessarily cause the other.

John's plan:

Step 1: Open source everything, pay 1 billion for Mysql.
Step 2: ????
Step 3: Profit

They would have made more money if they took the billions he spent on open source acquisitions and put them in low risk mutual funds.

His plan sunk the company. He even stated early on that having a business model was not important.
