I am one of those remaining BeOS addicts. I love the BeOS' responsiveness, its short boot-up/shutdown times and its, well, overall feel. But no one can deny the fact: BeOS 5.0.x PE is getting old. Very old, with a kernel build-time of around May 2000.

Novell Inc. is banking its re-entry into the consciousness of IT shops on Linux. Through its acquisitions of Ximian and SuSE Linux AG last year, Novell is working hard to regain its stature as a major technology player. Even if your work doesn't require you to reboot your Linux machine several times a day, waiting for a system to reboot can be a real drag. Enter kexec. Essentially, kexec is a fast reboot feature that lets you reboot to a new Linux kernel -- without having to go through a bootloader. Faster reboot is a benefit even when uptime isn't mission-critical -- and a lifesaver for kernel and system software developers who need to reboot their machines several times a day. Kexec is currently available on the x86 32-bit platform only.

Mono Beta 1 has been unleashed onto the public. This is the first of two planned public betas before Mono 1.0 rolls out the door. The public betas are approaching an offical "production quality" state, and by 1.0 should be stable enough for corporate and coder consumption everywhere. In their keynotes at the Windows Hardware Engineering Conference, Jim Allchin and Bill Gates plan to stress the value of melding hardware and software innovation, as well as demonstrating what some of Microsoft's new technologies can do. In the meantime, Bill Gates confirms that there will be no AMD Windows 64 until Q4, but he calls for 64-bit software support.

A recent discussion on the lkml looked into a reproducable random file I/O regression in 2.6 compared to the 2.4 kernel. Alexey Kopytov posted the benchmark results, attempting to simulate the workload of a database under intensive load. The tests were tried with all I/O schedulers, including the anticipatory, deadline and CFQ, and in all cases 2.4 outperformed 2.6. Read the report at KernelTrap.

Concerns about open source use can fuel internal naysayers at the acquiror who favor an internal solution over acquisition, says LinuxInsider.
