Project Looking Glass is a 3D windowing and visualization system for Sun’s Java Desktop System. There is currently a proof of concept demo available, and if you’re interested in trying it out, here’s a quick tutorial.

celebrating 2 years of going nowhere with a stupid HCI idea and the same crappy demo.
CPU = “2 GHZ or faster”
It is recommended by Sun Microsystems that you have a fast processor; I am personally using a 2.3GHZ SMP.
I thought this flopped? I would recommend everybody just wait on Windows Longhorn Aero Glass, its 100% better looking.
From the java.net website : https://lg3d-core.dev.java.net/lg3d-getting-started.html
Should work on fedora/RH and Suse.
There’s over 4500 messages in the forums. Many are working hard to make it a nice product.
There’s also a liveCD in the making !

Promises, promises. By the way what does this article have anything to do with `LongHorn’?
Looking Glass is a cool concept, sadly no one aside from SUN is adopting it. OSS seems to be going in a different direction , what with composites and the such. Take a look at E17 for what is to come from the OSS desktops, definitely interesting. Too bad E17 is not a very usable DE/WM, still very pretty. :^)
Looking glass is not designed to be adopted by anyone or become anybodies standard desktop. It is a framework for people to test different ideas. It’s easy to say that the 3d desktop is useless/the next big thing. With looking glass you can actually test your ideas and see what they are like. And if the whole 3d thing turns out to be a dead end then fair enough, but until you have a way to test things, you simply can’t say for sure. And that is where looking glass comes into the picture.

Looking Glass is definently an interesting project, but the problem I have is; If you watched that PLG video you hear Jonathan Scwartz saying that the dominant desktop provider doesn’t want innovation and it shouldn’t be dictated by one company. I don’t know who writes his speeches but what the hell is than Looking Glass? One company trying to put _exactly the same_ desktop on every computer. I don’t see the point in this. The project is very interesting to be used in a open source enviornment, it’s a shame no one is adopting it, but if I would have to watch the same shit on every computer I would probably freak out
And yes, E17 does look great, but not nearly as useful as Looking Glass. Take away the fancy 3D moving wallpaper and the shiny click effects and you are left with a standard 2D desktop. While E17 impresses through it’s beauty, PLG impresses through it’s funtionallity – that you can actually _do_ something with a 3D desktop besides showing off.
Why wait for ShortHorn when Mac OS X is already here?
Back to the subject though. How come no movie instead of a demo?
Looking Glass is totally cool –

Why must MaxOSX people always throw around this greater than you and just thought I’d let you know attitude? Insecurity about that fact that nobody gives a crap?
You know that windows and linux users (especially linux users) are *not*, I repeat *not* jealous. Mac seems cool I guess but honestly I find it pretty gay. Yeah, gay as in homo. Whatever. Linux users are mostly computer and os enthusiasts, Mac users are mostly gay canadians.
So, uh, just quit bringing up how great you think you are ok? Aye?
LOL Foo!!
“Mac users are mostly gay Canadians”
Are you sure about that? Heh…
