Prex is an open-source real-time OS for embedded systems. Prex version 0.2.1 was released today. The ARM processor support was added in this release. Now, Prex works on the Game Boy Advance with On-Screen Keyboard. The screenshots are available here.
Is prex actually useful for anything? Couldnt find any information about that on their homepage…
No, it may not be so much useful now.
But, please think. While GNU adherents advocate the freedom of software, they are using SymbianOS in their SmartPhones. Why? Because their freedom of OS selection is restricted by the phone service provider, as for now.
However, this situation will be changed. Sooner or later, all telephones will become IP based and many other electric devices will also be connected via network to each other. At that time, which OS carries out the role of the infrastructure? Linux? NetBSD? — I don’t think so. I am afraid that we have to leave the technology improvement for our life to the monopolistic OS like Symbian or Windows.
We should start to make other open source OSes that are really suitable for the embedded systems. It is not important how useful it is now.
Worthless websites no detail on how to install prex on you GBA nor how to get it setup as far as hardware.
I just started up the prex rom in my emulator. Any ideas on how to start up the onscreen keyboard?
i dont see a cartridge in the gameboy, and i dont see any cables anywhere..
but very kewl nontheless.. would be fun to carry around my GBA and take short notes on it. LoL. i’ve all but given up on it being useful too.. LoL..
someone port X and matchbox to it..heh
Why don’t you ask the OS developers?
This might be a little offtopic, but I’ve seen more and more comments on an article asking for support. Use the appropiate channels, for sake’s sake.
Looks like a just another os for fun and experience.
Who cares is it really useful?
