Why did the news title is ROBIN WILLIAMS introduces You to Mac OS X? I thought you were talking about the actor!! I mean, is this Robin Williams someone well known and important? If not, why the hell does the news title have his name on it?

Robin, in this case, is a she. She has been writing books on using Macs (I mean the OS mostly) since at least System 7.1, maybe earlier. Her books are excellent for beginners through intermediate users.
Robin WIlliams (the actor) does use a Mac. There’s that story about him entering the Apple store in California and taking his picture on all the Macs there, setting them as the background image.

You still have not fixed that plagiarism problem. Some quotation marks would go a long way toward solving that problem. Why is it so hard to give a proper citation? “Linked by” is completely insufficient as it does not imply that your opening paragraph is taken directly from the article. Think about it: take the characters used to form the word “Linked” and convert them to quotations marks and you would still have characters left over. It would only save you a trivial amount of bandwidth, but it does show that doing the right thing over the wrong thing is actually beneficial to all parties involved. This is the only major news site that does not attribute the text written by other authors correctly. Even on Slashdot, a submitter is appropriately bashed when he does the same thing. Don’t let your pride keep you from doing the right thing: cite your sources.

I have a copy of it myself; it’s a little book but it taught me so much about sound design principles. She also has some books about computer typography that are really informative.

I’ve never really liked macs untill OSX came out. Mainly due to the Unix (FreeBSD) kernel imbeded in OSX
Also the interface is a lot cleener and usefull imho.

We Mac users don’t use Macs because of a technical feature (based on Unix etc). In fact if I never see a command sign, I would not miss it. Hint: to use Mac Os X you don’t need to know or type a single command in the Terminal app. I don’t know when I last used the Terminal- a few times to show off some one that one can type ‘top’ and see all the running processes or to type some aracane command to mess with the system. For the regular Joe, this is a good thing. But if you are the geeky type, then by all means flirt with the Terminal big time!
“We Mac users”? You have a mouse in your pocket? I specifically bought OS X because of a technical feature (read: BSD). You’re right that you need no knowledge of the terminal (Terminal.app to you) to use OS X and it’s good for you get atop your soap box and preach it. I just don’t ike being lumped in with your local group of Mac buddies, especially, when you make ‘us’ sound like a bunch of dolts. And before you think I am a techie, let me tell you I’m a graphic/web designer who is in love with his ‘arcane’ commands. I don’t mean to be so harsh on you, but that comment made ‘us’ look silly. And that’s the kind of fodder (insert OS here) zealots just love.

Sorry about the ‘we’. The ‘we’ refers to the us of the older generation who grew up with Classic. You are right of course, now there are many new technically astute users, such as yourself, espousing the Mac for its solid underpinnings. These folk can use the most modern GUI on a thoroughly wetted solid foundation in more creative ways to get their work done including by use of the command line.
BTW, not using the command line does not make one a ‘dolt’- come off the superior pedestal!

I was just (10 min ago) reading the May 2004 issue of Esquire at my brother’s house, an issue on Johnny Depp, and the first line of the interview with Johnny is:

Uh, Robin Williams really did do that. It was in that article in Slate, I believe, that talked about celebrities always appearing in the Hollywood area Apple store.

I didn’t know Robin Williams, the author, myself but her book on design looks very interesting and I’m going to enjoy reading it.
If you have been around graphics/typology/composition/webdesign you should know Robin. No one fixed the title on OSNEWS.
