“Microsoft is to ship the McKinley version of its 64-bit .NET Server preview software to PC manufacturers later this month. It being tagged Microsoft Windows Advanced Server, Limited Edition version 1.2, one can reasonably conclude that it is not finished as such, but if we’re going to provide software for Intel hardware as soon as it’s out (which is what we’ve said we’ll do, isn’t it?) then LE it has to be.” Read the report at TheRegister.
Finaly a true 64 bit operating system running on true 64 bit hardware. Thank you Microsoft and Intel for yet another great inovation. You two truly are the most productive companies in the world when it comes to new and inovative technologies. My hat’s off to you two!
Ruprecht, I had enough patience with you for the last few weeks.
You are constantly coming to osnews to blow off steam. Cut off the sarcasm and talk like a sensible, calm reader, or please DO NOT come back here. If you have something *useful and insightful* to say, by all means, say it. If not, better not say anything.
This is not slashdot. Go over there if you want to show your hatred for Microsoft.
This site supports Microsoft, the same way that it supports any other company and alternative OS. You are taking sides, in a very ugly way (and I don’t just mean this post of yours, but your past ones too).
I would like to ask you to not post here again. I truly had enough of your posts, especially the ones that talked so harshly about me without first *think* before you write. If you want to make jokes or a “point”, go elsewhere. This is my domain, I run the place. And you are not welcomed anymore. Further posts I see from you around, they will be deleted. This is the end of lot of patience I had with you lately.
BTW, if you have any questions or you want to discuss things, email me. DO NOT post here. Just email me.
maybe it´s not slashdot, but your outbreak sure hit like rabbit-shot and is just not the layed-back, professional appraoch to commentary on an informational site such as this.
You obviously do not have the background of the whole story. Therefore, this is far from a rabbit-shot.
but all that guy has said has been stuff I ignore on slashdot.
Ms never really upgraded to intel chips quickly ever. Back when pentium pro cameout it died since MS took so long getting win95 out. PPro was a great chip in its day destroyed by lack of use. MS may think the itanium is the next ppro and not want to get out the OS quickly. Its also a significant investment in a technology companies are not rapidly adapting to use.
As he joked 64bit has been done before, and possibly done better (im no chip expert and may never be). So the cost of development on a completely new arch. is not lucrative enough to make a multi-billion dollar company spend resources on something which may very well fair.
off topic a bit: I may not agree with eugenia on everything, but shes consistent, and can accept new ideas. If eug doesnt want me posting on her site, its her choice, Id would be upset, but its her decision and nothing is going to change that. eug has been deleting this guy’s horrible troll-like posts for a while now and if doing that keep more slashdot annoyances from making this site useless for discussion then so be it.
meant may not fair very well. Dyslexic and tired, bad combination. And eug after readin his other posts I dont think anyone els ewho has would mind a ban.
I am looking forward to having a bit of a play on 64 bit Windows (One day!). The only thing is I fear being disappointed because of no speed increase, maybe even a slow down.
I fear this will be a niche market for scientists and big databases for a long while yet. Especially considering the incredible performance of 32 bit x86 processors.
PS. And I agree with Eugenia too, I post from time to time on here and only when I feel I have something worthwhile to say. Generally every post I read on here is intelligent and valid, unlike slashdot. Lets keep it a place for adult discussion not flame-wars (although MATURE discussion of different viewpoints can be interesting)
The Pentium Pro hardly died, It was the 1st member of the P6 family (PPro, PII, PIII, celeron, Xeon) so it was never meant to last long. Generally Intel seems to release the 1st chip of a new architecture only for a limit period of time before quickly replacing it. Look at the P4 the Northwood version is consider better then the initial version, not only is it .13 as oppose to .18micron but it’s got double the cache.
From what i remember the PPro didn’t support MMX while the high end Pentium’s did at the time. The PII bascially the PPro with MMX and less cache (i think i could be wrong though 😉
As regards Microsoft and 64bit OS’s well wasn’t NT running on the Alpha from quiet an early stage in it’s development. NT4 being lasted supported version. Compaq stopped the development of Alpha Win2k (NT 5) which when you consider that compaq later decided to axe the Alpha and sell Alpha tech. to Intel is interesting.
cant compare older chips and their speed to market to nowadays, intal has real competition now.
The pentium, from what I understand was supposed to die with the pentium pro coming out. The ppro outperformed pentium IIs at least 50% their clock cycle. I think it had something to do with the ppro being a pure 32bit chip and the pentium II was not. (pretty sure its been a while). So the PPro has a little history possibly repeating itself right now.
Ppro was definately a better branch, and had intel been able to sell the athlons might not have been that much more powerful then the generation of x86 chips before the p4.
the p II was definately not an upgrade or replacement of the pro tho, that much I garrantee you.
some differences between the ppro and the pii:
cache ran at full processor speed on the ppro, only half on the pII.
Pentium pro’s upgrade was the p II xeon.
Pentium pro could be used with more then 2 processors, pII oculd only have 2.
Ppro was a risc chip and had a 486 emulator in it which ran no faster then a normal pentium. It was designed as a server and workstation processor.
pII was similiar to both the pentium mmx, and the pentium pro, but was not a upgrade of either.
